Do you experience random reboots and/or freezes when doing an activity? If yes, please comment.

Hi All!

I've been reading countless comments about F7 watches (also other devices from the F7 series such as Epix, Enduro and Tactix) producing unexpected reboots and freezes. Unfortunately, this has been the case for many users since November 2024 and now it is end of January 2025. As far as I saw this happens while using different activities such as walking, hiking, running, track run, trail run, triathlon and the list goes on.

I witnessed how frustrating this could be as my wife was going through the same. I believe, we did all we could, even more. We did countless soft and hard resets, installed the same latest 19.41 production FW from the watch's developer menu, rolled back to FW 18.16 which appeared temporarily good then failed as well. After having spent so much time and energy, today my wife's loved Fenix 7s Sapphire Solar was taken to the Garmin official store in our location. After we shared all our experiences and explained in detail the actions we did the representative made no questions and exchanged the watch to a PRO model. The representative mentioned that he was not aware of any Pro models failing. Since the community have no official information I thought to create this post and I am asking you all facing reboots and/or freezes to provide the following information below in a comment. Perhaps this will reveal something useful that can be used by the Garmin folks.

1. Model of your device.

2. Software version (production or beta)

3. Short description of the circumstances (for ex.during track running, following a preloaded course while using hiking, etc.)

Thank you for your input.

  • please also tell the engineers that the 16.22 software works great! it doesn't restart during activities, thanks

  •  it's appreciated that you provided some feedback (finally) but cannot verify your reply as  an answer given that users already reported your interim solution* doesn't work.

...this doesn't look good at all! please
keep working on it! I tried the 20.13 beta
software a few days ago, but it also
restarted while walking, running, or hiking,
    so you couldn't fix it!'

What is Garmin's position about those who don't want to be part of the beta testing community? What would be the solution for them? Will Garmin send out reliable watches to make them able to track their activities and metrics until they have a functional watch from the Fenix 7 line?

*Garmin really expects hundreds or thousands of people to become beta testers without clearly having this intention otherwise they will have a 600 - 1000 €/£/$ paperweight? I'm sorry, but don't buy that story.

  • but cannot verify your reply as  an answer given that users already reported your interim solution* doesn't work

I always verify my reply, as this is a verified Garmin official reply, which is the purpose of this option. Users are welcome to mark their replies as suggested answers if they have found a solution to a concern, of course. And even encouraged to do so. And since I am still reporting this feedback to our engineers, the official Garmin reply is still the Public BETA, or waiting for the next full update release.

That being said, Garmin does not expect all users to test the BETA software. This as always, is optional. Just know that Garmin is still investigating this for solutions.

  • The official Garmin position is that the 20.13 beta fw resolves the rebooting issue. However, multiple users already commented that they faced the same problem with the 20.13 beta.

You highlighted that switching to beta fw is 'optional'...come on what other options impacted users have other than put their watches to the drawer until next public fw is out?

I'm not impacted by this issue but it's hard to see what's happening and keep quiet. Unfortunately, my experience is not positive after exchanging messages with you . As this is a dead end conversation I won't make further comments.

  • I would still say this, please tell the engineers that the 16.22 software works great! It doesn't restart during walking, running, hiking activities! Maybe it's good info as a starting point!! thanks

  • The official Garmin position is that the 20.13 beta fw resolves the rebooting issue.

The official Garmin position is they are testing a fix for the crashing/rebooting concern when navigating with the latest BETA software version 20.13. This unfortunately is not likely to resolve all circumstances of crashing/rebooting during activities. And since this is still being tested, as those who are experiencing this report their experiences whether this is resolved or not, Garmin can update this.

  • exactly, the Beta 20.xx is awful, many regressions and always a lot of report about crash during activity.

Beware navigation is not working now ! Mpa is truncated, slow to render and position is not sync between map/location. No reply from Beta tream for the moment !!!

  • I really hope that in a new beta software 20.14, Garmin engineers will fix these errors, which we have been describing here for weeks :)

I had the watch frozen when I loaded a course for running, it was perfectly working untill it froze for no reason (I wasn't even off course) then the only thing i see is a frozen map with 80% calculations. All the clicks and scrolls I've maken compiled after 10 minutes with an error in routing.

I re-installed the topo maps later and loaded a course and it was fine, BUT then when I'm using nagivate back to start (routing not track back, no course loaded ofc), it never gives the directions. It doesn't freeze but just stuck on the 80% calculation phase with no directions... (I tried this with walking activity twice). And it was not even that far/complicated.

I did a hard reset today and I will try later the navigation. I can't believe that you go up to high-end models to use maps and yet.... anyways.

  • yes, I feel your problem! unfortunately, the fenix 7 models have been suffering from this restarting problem for about 3/4 years, which Garmin has not yet been able to fix! the whole situation is very sad and disappointing, but I will stand by the brand for a few more months!
