Received couple of "No sleep data" or totally messed sleep recording

Hi all,

Can somebody explain me how the sleep recording and assessment works?

How really works with all the gibberish and stuff, not how Garmin explains it to their customers.

It seems very messed algorithm as it seems on couple of occasions I received "No sleep data recorded" on top of that, last week or so, when I receive a data, it seems totally messed due to the fact I went to the WC in the night which isn't totally OK. Yes I do understand my sleep cycle has been interrupted for a min or two, but this shouldn't allow the whole cycle to start over the time when I return to bed e.g. cut for example three hours of sleep which gives me a total of 1-2 hours of sleep which is extremely unacceptable.

On top of that, even today, last night I went to sleep at roughly 1 AM, waked up in 8 AM, and the watch told me it didn't recorded any data.

If this would help - the watch is Fenix 6X Sapphire with the latest official firmware 26.00 and adjusted sleep time of 00:30 to 08:30.

  • Hard resetting the watch using the below procedure, it seems to resolved the issue:

    1. Power down the watch.
    2. Power on and as soon as you see the triangle press and hold top and bottom right together.
    3. Release top right on first beep.
    4. Release bottom right on second beep

  • Well, the joy was pretty much fast as the same problem repeats over and over again in the past few days.

    For example last night:

I have setup a bed time 23:30, went to bed around 22:30 and well asleep around 23:00. The I woke up in the middle of the night and took a look into the watch - it doesn't show I am sleeping. I fell asleep again and woke up around 2 AM to go to the bathroom and after that the watch started showing that I fell asleep.

    Screenshot below:

I am not quite sure what the problem is and how this sleep widget works, but I got pissed and updated manually to the latest beta - 26.86, hopefully to resolve this annoying problem.

It seems totally unrealistic that I sleep more than 8 hrs and this watch always tells me that I barely slept and in most of the time not to receive proper measure of the sleep.

  • Do you wear the watch at least 2 hours before going to bed? How long did you stay awake when going to the bathroom? A longer awake time will indeed reset the sleep.

  • Hi trux,

I wear it 24/7 and the only times I do not wear it is when I charge it which is once a month, usually throughout the day. As for the bathroom time, it depends, but its between 5 to no more than 10 mins, if I want to drink water before return to bed. In the past I remember stayed a lot longer wake and the sleep tracker simply put a pink line during that time.

The funny thing is I started noticing this problem after I started tracking "walking" activities in pursuit of the ultimate walking badge. Part of me still thinks there might be a problem with the widget when the activity has been "resumed later" and cannot escape from this as I read in other topics in the forums- this could prevent the widget from proper tracking.

In other words, when I am outside, and pause the "walking activity" with "resume later", for example, when I enter a building, and after I exit it, resume it, I think the watch somehow messes everything and this affects the sleep widget. I don't know, just speculating.

  • If you forget to resume, stop, and save an activity, it prevents the sleep to be recorded. However, in such case the entire night would be missing, till you stop the activity.

Try resetting the watch in the evening (sync and then press the Ctrl button for some 30s), and see whether it helps. Preferably do it 2 hrs before going to bed, though I never had problems with sleep data even after resetting the watch late in the night.

  • Thank you, I will give it a try this evening few hours before going to bed.

  • Hi, have you figured out a solution? My watch (VivoActive 5) started doing this as well. First it recorded sleep on my watch but it didn’t sync to connect or express, while all other data did sync even HRV. And now when I woke up last night to go to the bathroom, my watch didn’t say I was sleeping in the widget. So I did a hard reset and went back to sleep. My body battery went from 51 to 21 after the hard reset, but it started tracking sleep. However when I woke up it only recorded sleep from 5.30 in the morning. While I was asleep at 11 in the evening prior.. I did edit sleep in the app, but now it only shows one big light sleep part from 11 until 5.30. And HRV is also missing until 5.30.

is the solution a hard reset before bed? Because that’s very annoying, always when I perform a hard reset my body battery either jumps 20 ish points higher or drops 20 ish points lower.

  • Hi Esther,

For the time being it seems to be resolved, but honestly, I have no idea how I got it fixed. At some point I started suspecting corrupt map (I say "corrupt", but it doesn't shown any indications of corruption, disregarding the fact it totally messed my watch) which I installed and messed somehow my watch and after removed this map, soft-restarted the watch, it seems resolved. As it catches the time when I got to sleep, catches the time when I wake up during the night and the sleep cycle continues until I wake up in the morning without the annoying interruptions described in the first post in the thread.

Here is a screenshot of the last night's sleep

Honestly, I don't know what the problem was, but for the time being it seems to be resolved. You could try to empty your activities history as I did previously and it seems this resolved it temporarily.

  • Thank you!

My watch and the connect app worked normally last night. So my watch tracked sleep without a hard reset and syncing also worked. I did nothing special before I went to sleep. But the night before last night I did a hard reset, because sleep tracking hadn’t kicked in. So I’m not sure either if that did help. Or that it was a two night problem and it would resolve regardless.

Hopefully everything will work well from now on. My watch is only 6 weeks old so I’m already getting tired of all the troubleshooting I had to do..

  • My watch didn’t record sleep again last night and on top of it.. at 5.28 in the morning my watch said it was 4.57….. so unreliable! After a hard reset it also lost all data it did record.
