Button of Fenix 6 pro does not click anymore, is there anyone who has successfully replaced a microswitch?

The "up" button of my 2.5 year old Fenix 6 pro does not work anymore. It does not click anymore. I have tried to soak it in warm slightly soapy water for 30 minutes but it did not solve the problem. There is a website where the watch is opened and I want to do this too. But first I need a replacement of the microswitch. Is there anyone who has successully replaced it? I assume you need to solder it?

I found this website with microswitches: https://advancedrepair.co.uk/garmin-fenix-6-power-button-onoff-switch-connector-2839-p.asp

And this is where someone opens the watch: http://www.f-blog.info/garmin-fenix-6x-pro-disassembly-or-teardown-whatever-you-say/

Or there other options?

Thank you!! I have a Fenix 3HR with broken switches here that is waiting for new ones for years...

Lifted pads are indeed the end (for my skillset anyway).

If you are in the UK i am more than happy to help. I am in Ashford , Kent we can meet somewhere or do it on the post.

  • I have ordered a switch from the Ebay link earlier this week and it is already shipped.

Thank you for the kind offer! I'm not in the UK though. I'll take my chances with the old 3HR, I bought it cheap as an untested unit but could not find these switches. It got shelved with too many other unfinished (electronics) hobby projects. But I'm giving this one another go!

  • Thanks to Jouke for starting this thread that lead me down the path of replacing my microswitch in my Fenix 3 (not HR version) but unfortunately in the end, I think there was more wrong with my Fenix 3 than my microswitch.  I wanted to contribute my experience here in case someone in the future needs to do the same thing.  Along the way, I think I found potentially some other options.

First, my Fenix 3's action button started to become intermittent in is response, and I couldn't stop a run or start a run by pressing it just once.  It then at one point started to switch engage on and off rapidly without any user input.  I took the watch out, analyzed the microswitch on the board and it was soft and basically didn't click when depressed any longer.  In fact, it barely seemed to depress at all.

I ordered a new micro switch from the One Click Components ebay listing that someone had linked to in this thread.  All in, it was about 14 pounds shipping to the US.

I soldered off the old microswitch, cleaned up the pads on the circuit board, and then soldered the new one in.  Just FYI, this took me about 3 attempts because my soldering iron is not great, and I was putting way too much solder on.  Optimally you would use a hot air blower specifically for Surface Mounted Device (SMD) work.

I got the new switch on and at first it seemed to work.  Start a run with a button press worked.  Stopped it with one button press and it worked.  I thought it was fixed.  Over about an hour though it started to have phantom action button presses where it was as if I was pressing the button but I was not.  Then, it would start doing it rapidly.  Basically, back to where I was, BUT the new microswitch did have a nice click to it.

So, in the end the new microswitch didn't resolve the overall issue.  Maybe I have some other thing going on, but it is unclear to me (e.g. bad resistor?  bad capacitor?  something causing the switches to fail?  )

Some new information for someone in the future to check though would be to source the switches from a cheaper provider rather than a reseller on Ebay from the UK.  I looked through hundreds of switches on www.lcsc.com, and I think I found the switch that the UK company must resell.  You can check it out here:

    https://www.lcsc.com/product-detail/Tactile-Switches_PANASONIC-EVPAEBB2A_C79149.html

Warning, I do not know if this has all the correct specifications, but it looks identical, it has about the same size of the Fenix 3 switch and the one that the UK company is selling but at a significantly reduced price per switch even after shipping from China.  It is a Panasonic switch with manufacturing part number EVPAEBB2A in a SMD, 2.6x4.5mm package.

I hope that this information helps someone in the future looking to replace these switches in older discontinued Fenix 3 watches.

Thank you for posting your experiences. I just received the switches I ordered from Aliexpress ages ago. I only had the picture to compare with the Ebay seller so I just hope they are OK. Now the hard part.. soldering these tiny things.

  • Thanks for sharing your experience. I have received the switch I ordered via Ebay a couple of weeks ago and I am gathering courage now in order to open the watch. First question: did you open the front or the back or do you need to open both? And is it clear where and how to desolder the old switch?

  • I open just the front and then remove the motherboard by 2 or 3 screw s

  • I used to have an old Fenix 6 Pro, but I think I lost it. Otherwise, I could have helped you by taking apart the parts for you. However, you might want to try reaching out to SZComponents and request them to help you find the necessary components. It might solve your problem.
