Unable to use Navigation Routing features [Edit : after copying third party maps]

Hello,

I recently bought a Fenix 6s Saphire and did some hikes and runs using the navigation option "stored locations", select one and "Go".

It worked perfectly fine, computing the shortest route and guiding me during the activity.

Then I installed Garmin Express on a windows Computer and did all the proposed map updates. There was some related to worldwide coverages like Pacific, Africa, etc... (which do not appear in the maps list  on the watch by the way, unless it is included in the worldwide DEM Basemap), but most importantly I updated the Topo Active Europe maps as suggested by Garmin Express. The update was successful without any error message.

Since then, I can still view and browse maps, but when I try to navigate to a "stored location" or a "POI", I always get the same error message "Erreur de calcul d'Itinéraire" in French which I would translate by "Route computation error".

This is independent of the activity, of my current location, and I tried many different destinations which used to work before the update.

In map settings, the following maps are activated:

- Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR

- TopoActive Europe 2021.12, North East

- SkiView 2021.20

- TopoActive Europe 2021.10, South West

I have also added some maps from OpenTopoMap in the GARMIN folder but they are disabled on the watch.

Any idea why the routing function do not work anymore ?

  • Problem solved ! Thanks to all your advice.

I removed all third party maps from the GARMIN folder (through PC USB connection) and turned the watch OFF and ON.

Immediately I was able to route again !

So no need to restore the TopoActive maps since apparently they were not involved in the issue (i will modify the title of my topic).

Then I pushed a little bit further and tried to add some of the third party maps again:

    - Added Contour lines downloaded from OpenTopo Garmin Maps => routing OK

    - Added FRIKART Topo Summer  but disabled it from the watch => routing OK

    - Disabled TopoActive maps and enabled FRIKART Topo Summer  + Contour lines from the watch => routing still OK and much better looking maps...

So I confirm it is possible to use routing features with third party maps (at least with Frikart ones).

I did not precisely determine which map was causing the issue (by just being present on the watch, even if disabled). But it is one of the following two:

    - OpenTopo Garmin Map (the map itself, not the contour lines which are fine)

    or

    - Trails Overlay Map from Firkart

Many thanks to all those who helped me solving the issue.

  • I have just realised that map settings on the watch are specific to each sport/activity.

So when I disabled all third party maps in the "Map" activity, in fact they were still enabled in all other activities (yet not visible because TopoActive was the top layer). This would explain the routing error message as several routable maps were enabled in activities other than "Maps".

So probably nothing wrong with third party maps quoted earlier. Just need to make sure you select only one routable map in the settings of each individual activity !

It now sounds obvious but I initially assumed that map settings were common to all activities.

I hope it can help other users to avoid making the same mistake.
