Unable to use Navigation Routing features [Edit : after copying third party maps]

Hello,

I recently bought a Fenix 6s Saphire and did some hikes and runs using the navigation option "stored locations", select one and "Go".

It worked perfectly fine, computing the shortest route and guiding me during the activity.

Then I installed Garmin Express on a windows Computer and did all the proposed map updates. There was some related to worldwide coverages like Pacific, Africa, etc... (which do not appear in the maps list  on the watch by the way, unless it is included in the worldwide DEM Basemap), but most importantly I updated the Topo Active Europe maps as suggested by Garmin Express. The update was successful without any error message.

Since then, I can still view and browse maps, but when I try to navigate to a "stored location" or a "POI", I always get the same error message "Erreur de calcul d'Itinéraire" in French which I would translate by "Route computation error".

This is independent of the activity, of my current location, and I tried many different destinations which used to work before the update.

In map settings, the following maps are activated:

- Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR

- TopoActive Europe 2021.12, North East

- SkiView 2021.20

- TopoActive Europe 2021.10, South West

I have also added some maps from OpenTopoMap in the GARMIN folder but they are disabled on the watch.

Any idea why the routing function do not work anymore ?

  • Perhaps new TopoActive map was not downloaded correctly or perhaps it don´t like your used waypoint/saved location? Create a new saved location on the device itself and try to navigate to that point. And have a look again, if you have perhaps accidentally enabled two routable maps for the same area.

  • Thank you for your answer Volker.

Garmin Express says all maps are updated correctly.

I have tried with several saved locations including new ones created from the watch itself => same error

I double checked and only the maps listed above are enabled. I did have 2 routable maps activated when I first added the OpenTopoMap but now it is disabled and i still get the same error.

Do I need to remove all other maps from the GARMIN folder ?

  • Yes have you added any transparent layers, trail etc... or added two maps by mistake as Volker said.... Both will disable routing if activated at the same time in the activity map settings.

If your using a third part map... then just use the garmin basemap along with it.

Ps... Restart your watch again and try then...

  • I do have some transparent layers installed : trails, contour lines but I have disabled them in the "configure maps" menu on the watch when I first get the routing error message

Same for 2 routable maps of the same location but I now have disabled everything except the original Garmin maps.

I tried turning the watch OFF and ON again. Same result.

Do I need to do a deeper reset ?

  • If perhaps the map is faulty, a master reset (deletes all settings, courses, waypoints etc), is not helpful. Perhaps press 20 seconds the light button for a reboot (does not delete anything).

If you connect your device with basecamp and it has detected all maps on the device, choose the TopoActive map and try to navigate in basecamp on this map.

  • You could try a soft reset holding light button for about 20 seconds but just turning it off and on again usually fixes it for me.. (before I understood map layers can disable routing)....

You could delete all third party maps and load one at a time checking if routing still works.

  • Sometimes third party maps/layers can cause issues. So the idea to delete them all and test only with the TopoActive map, is a good idea. If the TopoActive map doesn´t work after that, I would delete and start another download of the TopoActive map..

  • When I press light button for 10s it tells me to Configure Emergency contacts with Garmin Connect first... If I stay pressed longer (15s), the watch will turn off. But it does not look very different from turning it off from the shortcut menu (2s light button).

I will try to connect again to BaseCamp tonight but when I tried yesterday, all maps were listed in BaseCamp but there was a progress bar on the TopoActive one saying "initial settings... or something similar" but I stopped it after 15 minutes.

Do you think that BaseCamp could have corrupted the map during this initial reading ?

  • Yes they can indeed, transparent contour layer seems OK though.. but if I overlay a track map I'll get "route calculation error"..

As you say reloading the garmin map is also a good idea, can be done easily from express

  • I will try removing all third party maps tonight.

If not sufficient, what is the correct way to delete the TopoActive map and start a new download ?

Directly from the GARMIN Folder ? They all have strange file names but I could guess from the size... Or is there a cleaner option from Garmin Express ?

I want to make sure that I will be able to download it again afterwards...
