Unable to use Navigation Routing features [Edit : after copying third party maps]

Hello,

I recently bought a Fenix 6s Saphire and did some hikes and runs using the navigation option "stored locations", select one and "Go".

It worked perfectly fine, computing the shortest route and guiding me during the activity.

Then I installed Garmin Express on a windows Computer and did all the proposed map updates. There was some related to worldwide coverages like Pacific, Africa, etc... (which do not appear in the maps list  on the watch by the way, unless it is included in the worldwide DEM Basemap), but most importantly I updated the Topo Active Europe maps as suggested by Garmin Express. The update was successful without any error message.

Since then, I can still view and browse maps, but when I try to navigate to a "stored location" or a "POI", I always get the same error message "Erreur de calcul d'Itinéraire" in French which I would translate by "Route computation error".

This is independent of the activity, of my current location, and I tried many different destinations which used to work before the update.

In map settings, the following maps are activated:

- Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR

- TopoActive Europe 2021.12, North East

- SkiView 2021.20

- TopoActive Europe 2021.10, South West

I have also added some maps from OpenTopoMap in the GARMIN folder but they are disabled on the watch.

Any idea why the routing function do not work anymore ?

  • So Sam201176, when using third party maps, what do you keep as active ?

    - Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR

    - Third Party routable map (ex: OpenTopoMap)

    - Transparent contour lines layer if not already included

And after a OFF / ON you can safely use the routing function ?

  • I was never able to use built-in routing when using 3rd party maps, ever, and I have been a Garmin user for years. Routing as always worked exclusively on Garmin supplied maps, for me at least. It always failed with the other OSM based maps I use. That does not bother me since I don't need it. I rather visually follow the route on the map, and I get off-course alerts if I deviate, and that's all I need. So in my experience  you must at least disable all 3rd party maps and try to route, and if that fails delete the 3rd party maps. It is kind of complicated how things works but what you see (the map tiles, essentially image files) and what the software uses to compute a route (the map database made of coordinate based lines and connections) are two different things stored in different files and assuming routing takes the same data that you see on the screen is not correct. So as I said make sure you disable all 3rd party maps one by one, and if that does not fix it delete them and try again. ActiveTopo, DEM, contours are the Garmin maps and keep those.

  • You just need to reload it in express... you don't have to manually uninstall the garmin maps....

  • It's a shame it didn't work for you... I only use third party map routing... With Frikart Topo Summer... I have a car Sat Nav using the normally redundant "automobile routing"..

With talkytoaster I use that for hiking routing....

And all my other maps have different hike profiles copied 9 times... for different hiking maps and layers +satellite imagery without needing to change settings all the time...

Using layers like tracks etc.. are still great for courses or hiking etc on the fly...

Hope you can get it working... All the best.

  • Do you confirm you managed to get routing working on a fenix 6pro device with Frikart Topo summer ? With Basemape kept active ?

Or only on other devices ?

  • Just use the world DEM base map with a third party map.... Should work unless the map you are using isn't routable?... what map is it?...

Hopefully for you turning the watch on and off after accidentally trying to route with layers etc will reset the process.

  • Same setup... FRIKART TOPO SUMMER...

    with Garmin basemap...

Routing works perfectly on my Fenix 6x Sapphire BLK DLC

  • Good to know !

I tried with DEM base map + Frikart Topo summer (France) unsuccessfully after turning OFF and ON again.

But apparently something was corrupted somewhere after all my trials so I will remove all and try again step by step.

  • Yes something definitely gets corrupted after getting "route calculation error" in this way.... But can be resolved as you say using your method... ,good luck...

  • Connect via USB cable to a computer and run Garmin Express. That can then reinstall the maps for you... I had a bug with a beta that wiped all my maps and this worked a charm plus if you've updated recently they may still be locally cached on the computer
