No matter where I am when I press the top right hand button to activate the GPS I get this error message.
Any Ideas?

Have you tried connecting it to GC via computer to get updated satalite positioning?...
Or you could leave it in the open for about 15mins with GPS active to get new positioning...
Is your CPE current…
I haven't connected ti device to my computer at all yet.
Go to the menu : System - Info. Scroll down with the down button to the page "CPE". If it does not say "current", you should sync…
As bluefish said, "safe position" is the default for the start button. So if you long-press your start button, the message that is appearing, is in fact what is supposed to happen.
Go to service menu and test GPS module inside it.

When I press top right I get to choose an activity. However I do see this message when I want to calibrate the altimeter or barometer or sync time. It is not an error message, merely a statement.
Now, if the GPS does not get connected than that’s a different matter. Does it connect?

Sorry if this doesn't help..
All the best....
A short press of the top right hand button gets an activity, a longer press gets "Wait for GPS". I then get that message after around 10-20 seconds.
I don't think I get GPS as my map location have yet to show my current position.

Go to the menu : System - Info. Scroll down with the down button to the page "CPE". If it does not say "current", you should sync the watch either with Garmin Express on the computer, or with the Connect Mobile app. If you do it with the Connect Mobile app, you should keep the watch connected to the open Connect app for at least 5 minutes.
If you have done this and go back to the info menu on the watch, it should now say current.
The whole thing also works if you leave the watch in the open air for at least 15 minutes in the same place and call up an activity profile. However, I prefer the above method with Connect Mobile.
If you haven't started any GPS activity for a few days and don't keep the watch updated regularly using this method, you will have to repeat this procedure.
The CPE file is a file that helps the clock to determine which satellite is where, and thus to determine your position faster. This file must be updated again and again, because the position of the satellites is constantly changing.

If you wait, does it go green? As I said this is not an error message it’s simply a statement of fact.
it is a problem if it does not detect the satellites
What Hotkey have you assigned to the start button?
Surely "Save position". I think that is the default.
I don't have and 'info' option under System.
My Softeare version is 16.7 though so maybe I need to update it?!?
