Whoop 4.0 band released … Garmin what’s your answer

I hope Garmin is listening to their customers and answer with a device similar to the Whoop 4.0 and Fitbit Charge 5. Clearly both these companies see the demand for a 24/7 band that will deliver a solid sleep and recovery metric.

Garmin is clearly winning the watch game but is missing out on a second device (whoop) for many Forerunner and Fenix users and the activity band users (Fitbit).

I hope Garmin is waiting as eagerly as all of us for Ray’s review!!!

  • I can see your point. I would also like to see a bracelet type of sensor, with all the algorithms that the F6/Marq has, including physio true up. That would allow me to get the full benefits from the Garmin ecosystem - like recovery, sleep, and more - whilst carrying one of my nicer watches also.

    I have the VivoSport and it comes close, but it lacks the most recent sensor, and physio true up, so training and recovery is not synced. 

    I would also like to see better materials used, and would be willing to pay for it. Silicone is light and comfortable, but options would be great. Like what the Marq offers compared to the F6.

  • I really hope that Garmin's answer is that they commit to never having anything hidden behind subscription based paywall like Whoop is.

  • Isn't the Vivosmart 4 what you're looking for? I use that one as a 24/7 band and then a Fenix 5X for activities. Then of course it would be nice with a Vivosmart 5 but what I think is much more important is if Garmin could fix so that true-up supports Body Battery as well. Then I'd say the Vivosmart 4 is the perfect second watch. 

  • That's interesting. My body battery is usually a pretty accurate indication of my recent activities and how I feel. For example, I have gotten 7 hours of sleep the past two nights and went to two hoLaughingt vinyasa classes in the last 24 hours and my body battery is 33, and that feels about right because I feel like I need a nap Laughing

    Are all of your sensors working? Does your sleep duration and heart rate seems accurate? The biggest thing I question is the accuracy of my respiration rate. 

    • Oh yeah I am sure it works. It does go down all day. Last night I went to bed and it was at 40. When I woke up i was back at 100. So I cannot really judge my recovery if I have 100 every morning. I am not sure on how it weights hrv in the algorithm. If I do get a score in the low 90 it is usually that I did not sleep good but that is rare.

  • Yeah. I think sleep is one of the main metrics for night recovery. Whoop gives me different recovery score every morning while bb is always 100. Do I am not really sure on how much to push with garmin. Right now my bb is 46 from 100 this morning. If I sleep good, it will be back at 100 tomorrow. I know it works for some

    I'll play the Devil's Advocate.  Just like your Fenix, Whoop is measuring heart rate, HRV, sleep, PulseOx, etc. from a wrist based sensor that has limitations and difficulties compared to taking those readings using other methods.  As you said, some find Body Battery works for them.  The same can be said about the Whoop band.  I believe the preference is a case of which readings one prefers over which ones they don't. How can we know without being tested with the proper equipment? I'm not here to praise Garmin's or anyone else's technology, but I believe all these measurements should be taken with a grain of salt. 

  • Agreed. I think i get my best recovery score using the oura ring and wattsonblue app. Whoop now grans the whole night hrv average hrv and hr. So the values match the ring now or garmin RHR. now whattsonblue grabs the last 2 hours of your hrv sleep and give you a value. I like that beter over the whole night. I guess you got to pick your poison.
