Fenix 6 Series - 19.20 Public Release

Hello Fenix 6 customers,

We understand this post of 19.20 is in reverse of what we usually do, but nevertheless, we didn't want to miss an opportunity to post the public release candidate, which is now rolling out to 20% of users. We know many are eager to begin using this update. Enjoy!

Please ensure that you are downloading the correct beta software for your specific device.

Instructions for installation are available below the change log on each of the above pages.

  • If you need to contact support then it would be better to use the support links on their website, not post to this user forum.

That said, I've been running 19.20 for a week without issue. Try forcing shutdown of the watch by pressing and holding the light button for at least 15 seconds until the watch turns off. Then restart the watch.

I am now in the habit of always performing a soft restart (power off through the menu) followed by a hard restart (described above) whenever I update my firmware and I seldom see problems unless the firmware is genuinely faulty.

  • I will find it EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING though if you expect me to reset my watch. I hope it can be more constructive and less destructive than that.

If you should need to, backup your settings first.

  • that's a superb tip. Thanks. I didn't realise you could preserve some settings. tyvm.

  • hey tiger

i think the purpose of addressing support was to reflect that this post came from staff. Perhaps i should have used that latter label. In fact, i'll make that adjustment (if i can do strike-through or something).

I do understand your point though

I think the other issue is that the product team have pushed a release candidate update to a proportion of users without choice. I couldn't avoid the installation, as it had been pushed to my phone. If i had chosen to be part of the beta tester group or pre-stable release testing, then i wouldn't have complained. However, i didn't manually choose to install 19.20 (as with the option presented on this thread). The other odd thing is i thought garmin express gives the option to install (rather than pushing straight to phone). It's been a few months i believe since the last firmware update, so i can't quite remember what the standard behaviour is.

Thanks very much for the tip regarding soft vs hard restarts. I occasionally power cycle the watch, typically after a firmware update, but i'm not sure i realised there was something in-between i.e. harder than a power cycle but softer than a full wipe / reload.

Having said that I've had the watch for maybe 9 months, maybe i should be considering a master reset. I have on occasion found that beneficial on my android phone. It's just a pain in the *** to reconfigure back to how one likes things.

    cheers,

    Gary

  • I am going to chime in to let users know on how to prevent automatic updates. I have been running 12.20 as i did not see the need to update until now with the new features. There is a garmidevice.xml file on your watch. It has version number. So right now you should look for a 19 and a 20. Replace that with 25 and 00. Then put the garmindevice.xml as read only so it does not get overwritten. Your watch should not update automatically anymore. and also turn off the auto update under system on your watch.

  • Exactly same problem with shorter battery life in 19.20. Consumption :1.099% /h

  • Strangely enough my battery life has improved with 19.20 - using Tactix delta solar, and it’s not related to using more solar. Consumption now 0.128%/hr

  • I'm almost the same:

    currently @ 29 hours exactly & 32% used

    1.10344% p/h

Literally zero tracking of any sort though. No meditation periods, no cardio or HIIT tracking, no strength sessions, no GPS usage, no bike use or hiking.

just the built in steps and intensity monitoring + all day pulseOx

    Slight frown

  • super tip

what other data does garmindevice.xml store though? Does it hold any config?

If yes and read only, that'll mean watch config changes can't get saved.

  • In case you have a corrupt file causing higher consumption. First sync with GC (via USB) to save your acitivites because the following will delete them...

Then find the following folders and delete them entirely: ACTIVITY, MONITOR, NEW FILES and REMOTESW. Unplug your device and power off, then power back on. Those folders will be recreated on startup.
