Load significantly less for similar effort activities since 19.10 update

Since updating to the 19.10 update two days ago the load after activities is recording significantly lower when compared to other similar activities.

For example, I ran 12km today & it calculated 51 load, vs a 7.7km run on Wednesday (pre-software update), which recorded 240 load. I actually ran slower of the Wednesday run & the zones captured off my HR monitor match this. I always exercise with my HR monitor (including today), so I know my readings are as accurate as they can be.

What’s the go here? How can this be rectified? It’s messing with my training stats & its pissing me off.

  • If it is Intensity minutes related - perhaps try changing your cculation based on your choice of HR zones and see if it goes away?

    1. Open the Garmin Connect app on a paired smartphone.

    2. Open the menu.
      • Android: Select   (top left)
      • iOS: Select More (bottom right)

    3. Select Garmin Devices.

    4. Select your device.

    5. Select Activity Tracking.

    6. Select Weekly Intensity Minutes.

    7. Select Heart Rate Zones.

    8. Select Moderate Intensity and select a zone.

    9. Select Vigorous Intensity and select a zone.

  • I am having similar issue with training load being way off compared to how it was before the update. Now almost all activities are being labelled as recovery activities despite being high aerobic/intervals sessions. My edge 830 is fine so this seems to be a fenix issue since the update. I contacted garmin support who suggested i did a soft reset - this hasn’t helped. My zones are unchanged from previously. Also pretty annoyed!

  • Try the intensity minutes thing I posted above? Set Z1 as Moderate and Z2 as Vigourous and see if that helps?

  • Will give it a try but todays run was hill reps so intense intervals. Intensity minutes was recorded as 3mins moderate and 76mins vigorous. Despite this training load only 54 and labelled as recovery.

  • Weird. I have two recovery exercises from friday and today of roughly equal intensity and they're the same (near enough), and todays was on 19.20 and fridays on 18.80.

Load calculation is based off HR so somewhere the zones are weird. One thought would be

Record your current HR zones somewhere for safe keeping.

Change your HR zones considerably - sync to watch. Check on watch they're the changed settings
Change them back to your recorded settings - sync and again check.

This sounds like the internal HR zones are corrupted and basically all your hr readings are Z0 or 1

  • That's a thought - in GC Web, for the activity what does it show in "Time in Zones"

For example, my saturday ultra in 19.2

  • Oh and in Settings/User Profiles/heart rate - double check there as well for RHR, Max HR etc

  • No, seems to he a spread of zones. Have changed the zones in each activity and resynced, then changed back but based on the above it is recognising the zones just not correctly calculating the load etc.

  • Yeah. Was worth a punt!

Are your HR zones by MaxHR or LTHR? If max, do you know your LTHR to try swapping over to that?

  • Oh changing the zones won't affect historical activities so you'd have to do the change and see if the next activity behaves :(...

    I use LTHR,
