fenix 6pro X - Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

When I plugin my watch to update with my Connect desktop app I get the above error. I'm running Windows 10, it is completely updated as of 08/08/2021 and I have tried disabling fast start in power options, deleting and reinstalling the drivers, and changing USB ports. Nothing changes and I cannot update my watch because of this. Does anyone have a fix or idea why this is happing?

  • Try cleaning the contacts on the watch and in the connector that connects to the watch. (A glass fibre electrical contact cleaning brush is good for this.)

Also try connecting the watch to the cable before pluging the cable into a USB port.

  • Thanks for the reply! That didn't seem to do anything. I get the same error. Disappointed

  • I've had that happen to me as well.  When I connect my 6X Pro to my desktop machine I had similar errors (Device Descriptor Request Failed / Set Address Failed).  Even with those errors, Garmin Express worked fine for me, as did browsing the watch's file system.

Changing USB ports didn't help, and using another charging cable and cleaning the contacts made no difference.  As a test, I tried a 6s Pro too, and got the same errors on the desktop, but both watches worked fine on one of my laptops without USB errors.

Running DISM / SFC on my desktop machine fixed this for me.  Worth a try if you don't find another solution.

  • Windows 10 does seem prone to bouts of failures to recognise USB devices. Especially after feature updates.

I occasionally get this problem and, aside from cleaning the contacts, I find that changing to another USB port usually cures the problem. I'm sure it is a Windows 10 problem as the same devices mount without issue on the same hardware under Linux Mint Debian Edition 3 and 4.

If could also be the cable has developed a fault.

The following article covers Windows 10 device driver migration in general with some suggestions for fixes:

    https://borncity.com/win/2017/03/15/windows-10-error-device-not-migrated/

  • Thanks, Eric! Neither seemed to correct this issue for me either Disappointed

  • It's not a driver migration issue. I don't believe. All I've ready on this particular error doesn't indication migration as much as a incomplete driver install or corrupted driver. But I'l be darned if I can figure out which driver.

  • I don't know how much this will help you but this is how my f6X appears in Device Manager, details of the drivers used by it, and some of the property details:

I have not looked in detail but the f6X appears to be mounting as a generic MTP device using generic Windows 10 USB and MTP drivers from Microsoft.

  • You said everything is up to date, so I'll assume that means Express too?  I had this problem in the past and installing the previous version of Express has always worked.  Eventually, there's a Win 10 update that works with the most recent version of Express.  You could try that.  Couldn't hurt.

  • Thanks. It too is current and reinstalled.

  • My watch doesn't even show up by name in the Device Manager.
