do you wear Fenix when riding with Edge?

Hi all who have both Fenix and Edge and use Fenix 24x7.

I wear my Fenix 24x7 to have sleep tracking, body battery, recovery time, etc. Recently I bought Edge 530 so both devices are supporting PhysioTrueUp. I wonder whether I should wear the Fenix while riding using Edge. As Garmin does not recognize same activities recorded on 2 devices I see following options:

* Start activities on both devices and discard one of them at the end

* record activities on Edge and just wear Fenix. (in order to have HR recorded in the 24x7 mode and body battery)

* record activity on Edge and leave Fenix at home (to have an even tan on your hands)

How do you do this? Of course this is the question to those, who wear Fenix 24x7. If you get off your Fenix for the night, or so, you probably dont care a about it :)

  • I have the same setup and I use both. I have both record the activity and then assuming it syncs with no problem from the Fenix I discard the one on the Edge. Physio TrueUp works alright but it doesn't always and being a triathlete I sometimes get off the bike and run anyway so I like having the watch with me.

One option you can use that I've played around with some is the the 530 can function as a remote display for the Fenix. So you get the larger display but the Fenix is doing the recording. It was mostly intended for use in triathlon and other multisport activities but can work just fine for a regular ride as well.

  • I mostly use your option 2 for MTB rides so I get my jumps recorded.  I don't usually have any issues with TrueUp and really don't care too much if I did.

I use option 1 on the road:  I have a RTL515, but can't hear the traffic notifications (old ears) from the Edge, so I use the vibration notification of the fenix to let me know a car is approaching, then discard the fenix recording when done.

  • Tkanks for your hints. I actually think Edge does some better job in terms of recording elevation and temperature as it is not affected by your hand.

i personally think the extended display feature is kind of crap, as it supports only 4 fields screens and I use on my 6X 5-8fields on a screen. So I needed to configure 4 field screen just in order to have something displayed on edge.

so I would prefer record rides on edge unless I am doing a MultiSport activity.

  • I generally just wear the watch for intensity minutes while riding without recording, and use my Edge and Physio True Up to sync them over.

There are a couple of exceptions:

    * For epic rides, I dual record, and discard one once I am sure it has saved.
    * For triathlons or brick sessions, I will usually use the Extended Display feature on the Edge.

As far as I can tell, once Move IQ on the watch detects you are riding (from the movement patterns), it turns stress and Body Battery off. These are only calculated once you have stopped riding.

  • I use F6x pro Solar for sound from varia radar rtl516 and music (with bone conduction headphones: aftershokz OpenMove (so I have no problems to hear the enviremont noise)) and my Edge 830.

  • - Start activities on both devices and discard one of them at the end

That's what I do,  I record with both, just in in case, flat battery, problem etc, then just cancel the 530 when the 6x has been saved

  • Hi , how do you configure your Fenix in terms of datafields for the extended display? As I understand, Edge supports only first 5 datascreens, from Fenix, and the datascreens cannot have more than 4 fields. That's kind of annoying, as I would need to add additional data screens just for this purpuse, as I was using more than 4 datafields on almost every screen on by Fenix before purchasing Edge... Do you have any workaround or best practice you can share? :)

  • An option would be to clone the ride activity on the Fenix and set that up with a 4 screen view, used just for extended display operation.

Then just pick that activity when you'll be using the extended display.

  • The Edge adds Lap Time and Multisport Time automatically to the Extended Display, so you don't need those fields on the watch.

Personally, I use Heart Rate, 3s Power, Cadence, and Distance as my primary fields. These are the fields I really need to monitor for performance and decision-making on course. (Others may have different preferences, but when you are on your limit and the brain is a bit foggy, I find keeping the main display as simple as possible helps). A second page of fields is Time of Day, Battery %, Normalized Power and Calories - the kind of fields I may want to know for re-assurance, and check maybe once or twice in a ride.

Remember, Extended Display is normally only used in the context of a triathlon, so you aren't needing complex navigation screens,

  • HI Wojtek,

I have been using both for a few years. I use the Fenix as my primary record and it syncs automatically with Garmin Connect. So the Fenix records all my activities, running skiing swimming riding etc. The edge gives me a real time display of speed cadence etc. I have it set up so that it doesn't sync automatically via wifi. So, while I save the activity it doesn't upload a duplicate that requires me to manually delete. That way I have a back up recording of the activity, if for some reason I stuff up the Fenix record, I then go into history on the Edge and delete all acitivities except the one I want to upload and then sync the edge hard wired to my computer. This system has worked well for me.
