GPX file is GPS plots, FIT file is GPS plots plus Garmin magic. If you have good GPS signal and Garmin magic is on your side - distances will be same or difference will be very small.
If GPS signal is…
If GC sends the GPX file to Strava why then do I rarely see any difference in distance?
Like you I’m not seeing it. I think strava gets a FIT file but I’d happily be corrected…

Gpx says
That's really not too bad for 10k. I tend to lose this much on shorter runs, in a town. Yes, there are iffy spots with tree-lined roads and the occasional slightly higher building, but even in the 'bad part' of town with wide roads, little vegetation and flats far away from the road I'm losing meters. Less than in other parts, mind, but the problem always seems to be present.
Much climb? I'm more interesting in loss/gain due to elevation - i know AndersB is looking at distance :)
No, mainly flat, +/- 1m on that part.

Yes, I also observe that
Yeah. I think I follow and yes there definitely seems to be some sort of internal hierarchy going on.
I still haven’t installed the Thorn map but with all maps ‘on’ today, it defaulted to the Topo Light V9 map (verified by individually turning the maps on/off).
I shall play some more when time permits. Still need to sort all my settings back out after the reset first.
Appreciate all you help with the map side of things.
To get slightly back on track after my map distraction.
I did a short walk in the woods this morning with the dog and used my watch and also my phone to record. So, some data:
Fenix 6s Pro: Left wrist:
Dist- 2.24mi
Gain - 57m or 187ft
Loss - 61m or 200ft
Max Elevation - 88m or 288ft
iPhone 11 Pro/Adidas Running: Right pocket:
Dist - 2.25mi
Gain - 56m or 183ft
Loss - 60m or 190ft
Max Elevation - 88m or 288ft
Number in bold are as reported by device/my settings
So admittedly a short bit of data but shows very little variation between two different devices. Certainly close enough to be with margin of error.
I’m in the Lakes next weekend so if I remember I’ll record with both devices again and see if more discrepancies creep in.
Also planning to hit a couple of local trig points next week work commitments permitting so will compare data from devices vs Ordnance Survey data for the trig.
Great stuff. Yeah, pretty small discrepancies. Have fun!
At the end I have purchased both the Topo light and the Thorns :)
I tried to enable both plus Talkytoaster one and create routing and seems to me working fine.
I'll try later on afternoon and report back how was the distance as well. The weather is quite bad now so I don't promise.
Great stuff! Yeah, I bought both. For me anyway, TL is SLIGHTLY more accurate on some local changes, but Thorns has so much data. Considering how cheap they both are, I didn't see it as an either/or.
Enjoy.
Thank you and for your help too.
