Fenix 6x Sapphire - not recognized by Garmin Express anymore

Hi, I have a 6x Sapphire which just got the 16.6 firmware update via Garmin connect.

I have an issue since several weeks that Garmin Express does not connect to my watch anymore. It does not show up as connected device (although MTP is enabled).

I have the same behavior on Windows 10 Pro as well as on MacOS X (10.14.x). Seems to me, the watch does not realize that it is connected to a computer... it does charge (though, showing only the small indicator at the top but not the full screen charging graph).

I already did a full reset, cleaned the contacts and tried a 2nd cable without success.

Anyone here that had a similar issue and managed to fix it? I'd like to be able to update the installed maps to the latest version.

Thanks in advance.

  • Adding mine again to Express is not possible anymore as it does not appear on the USB bus with MTP mode being enabled.

... and I tried on Win 10 pro as well... same effect.

  • Can you try this? On your Mac, before you connect the watch to the computer, make sure Garmin Express is closed. Connect the watch to the computer with the cable and then open Garmin Express. See if that works.

  • I did try this already before without success.

Not sure how the firmware exactly works but somehow, the watch has to detect that it is connected to a PC and then it enters MTP mode (the full screen charging indicator).

When you then disconnect the cable, the watch automatically restarts in order to load your map updates, music, etc. All this does not happen on my watch anymore.

  • I also have the same issue. Ever since 16.60 my whole watch is messed up. No WiFi, no Spotify, no connection to mac. Not good.

  • Updated June 18th, 2021:

PLEASE NOTE: This thread now has 2 different issues being discussed.

    1) A Fenix 6 series watch on software version 16.60 and all Windows PCs and Apple Macs tried never see the watch. The issue was resolved with the new software update.

    2) Garmin Express version 7.6.0.0 is no longer seeing a Fenix 6 series watch. A new version of Garmin Express was released that resolved the issue.

  • Not my issue... As a result of several full resets, nothing is stored on the device which could slow down or break the file scan.

  • Hello,

similar issue on my Garmin Fénix 6 Saphire Titanium (firmware 16.6) with Garmin Express (7.6.0.0) :

    - The watch is correctly identified by Windows 10 when plugged, the file explorer is then available

    - No disconnection observed

    - But when Garmin express is opened, disconnection occurs after 2-3 minutes, so no possibility to update maps...

    - Then, a reboot is necessary to connect again the watch (with Garmin Express not opened)

    For information, i have tried:

    - Different cables (4 of them)

    - Clean reinstall of Garmin Express (with removal of register data)

    - Cleaning of pins

I will contact Garmin support as this situation is not acceptable for a 1 year watch.

  • Please be sure you do reach out to the Outdoor Product Support in your region when you have the chance. The issue you are describing is unrelated to the MTP issue of the customers in this post I have been working with but it is still a serious issue that is watch related that we will be happy to address when you contact us.

  • Here is what I did and worked for me

I opened Garmin Express on my Mac, then went to preferences and unchecked the 2 little boxes there.

The watch connects to Garmin Express straight away ever since.
