Fenix 6x Sapphire - not recognized by Garmin Express anymore

Hi, I have a 6x Sapphire which just got the 16.6 firmware update via Garmin connect.

I have an issue since several weeks that Garmin Express does not connect to my watch anymore. It does not show up as connected device (although MTP is enabled).

I have the same behavior on Windows 10 Pro as well as on MacOS X (10.14.x). Seems to me, the watch does not realize that it is connected to a computer... it does charge (though, showing only the small indicator at the top but not the full screen charging graph).

I already did a full reset, cleaned the contacts and tried a 2nd cable without success.

Anyone here that had a similar issue and managed to fix it? I'd like to be able to update the installed maps to the latest version.

Thanks in advance.

  • As a last resort can you delete the watch from GE and then add it back?   Does the watch behave normally after the 16.60 update?  Might the update have been corrupted and now the watch ID is corrupted?  Not something I have ever encountered.

  • I had this issue already before the firmware update. I also removed it from GE with the result that I can't add it anymore as it is not connecting.

  • When you plug into Windows 10 via USB it should display what WINDOWs sees and should popup a dialog that contains ID information about the watch?  Does Windows see it?  This is before you start GE.

  • Windows "saw" it once, but not anymore. Also the Mac does not report anything on the USB bus.

Normally, if you connect the watch to a PC, you get a constant graphical charging screen (big percentage figures with an increasing green background), I only get the small indicator as if the watch is just connected to a usb charger.

  • I would talk to Garmin.  They will go straight for the cable I suspect.  It would be helpful, argumentatively, to have a second watch that you could connect to the same computer with the same cable---and it works.  That puts the blame squarely on the watch.  I suppose you could reinstall GE just for giggles but that ignores that you are trying two different platforms.  Time for Garmin to pony up a new watch.

  • Could it be the cable or/and conector? Mine takes some effort on the pc usb side to be recognized.

  • Hard to tell. The same cables work fine with the 6S Sapphire of my wife but the connector on the 6S is less deep inside the watch so they may have an easier contact.

I tried another one (6x of my brother) where I had to clean the contacts at watch side quite a bit to get recognized.

  • Hi. I have the same issue with Fenix 6. tried with3 different cables and its not recognized by windows 10. Did the same with the wifes  Vivomove and works okay. So to me it has to be the watch as cables, software and another watch all work fine.

    Help please

  • I got in contact with Garmin support and we tried a last time to fully reset the watch:

    Power off...

    press Light to start,...

then holding both Start and Back until the first beep...

release Start and wait for the 2nd beep...

    release Back

... did not solve the issue in my case. I'm going to send it back for repair / replacement

  • Hi, I have the same problem. Fenix 6x Sapphire & MacBook, every time I try to connect the watch to Garmin express, it simply won't connect. MTP mode, the watch is charging, which means there is nothing wrong with the cable. The only workaround I have found is to remove the watch from Garmin express and add it back. When I add it, it connects at once. However, it is not supposed to work this way, it should be able to connect without having to do all this.
