Stryd is not all it's cut out to be...maybe

This morning I ran twice with one watch hooked up to a Stryd and set to Always use for Pace and Distance and another just on GPS. In both cases the Stryd came up with a longer distance. First up was a trail run that we've been running for years so we know it is close to 9km. Stryd returned 9.31 where my GPS Trail Run gave 8.99 and my wife's 945 8.97km. Next up was parkrun. For those who don't know, parkrun is always 5km. Our parkrun has been accurately measured using a calibrated wheel so we know it's 5.04km from the wheel. And every GPS run we've done has been 5km +/-20m or so. This morning Stryd gave 5.24km while the GPS watches gave 5.02 and 5.01 respectively.

This wasn't the first time out with the Stryd. Several runs on a 400m track and a couple of other trails runs should have seen it calibrated by now. I haven't looked over earlier runs as I did want to make sure I had a number of different runs with the Stryd.

Let's see how things progress. I have done a couple of runs on a 400m track but not sure if I had the Stryd set up properly so can't comment on that except to say the watches gave the same distance. However, I now have the Stryd where I want it so can. and will, do some more comparison runs to see how this plays out.

  • 100% agree. I'm just kind of a data geek :)

  • So far all my runs have now been spot on, on a 13.44 km run I now have 3 days running where I got exactly 13.44 km using stryd, which is more or less exactly what I get using gps (all around fields so open sky etc) and even after using Strava's distance correction it's pretty much spot on.

Maybe I was lucky, let's hope it stays that way.

For now I am very happy with the Stryd, although I know I am probably going to get grilled by half of you in this thread ;-)

    Happy running all.

  • How can I compare gps distance and stryd distance?

  • I use an old Garmin watch to pair with Stryd, and use another watch for GPS. Not sure if there is an easy way to do it from the same device at the same time.

On top of that, you need to know which measurement is (more) correct. By far the best way is to run on a certified running track.

If you only have a single device, you could take turns: e.g., run exactly 10 laps with Stryd, then run exactly 10 laps with GPs.

  • So Stryd have announced a new model and it seems like a lot of the distance issues, and how accuracy is impacted by shoe changes has been solved?

Stryd have kindof tip-toed around this, as they used to engage in industrial strength denial if anyone dared to question the accuracy which I often found to be subpar to GPS, at least in open skies - Fenix 7 and Fenix 6 both do better for distance accuracy.

Interesting with Garmin now doing fully native running power and with Apple doing it via the wrist, and Coros and Polar doing it already for several years, to me the new model is going to be a hard sell - you could almost buy a Forerunner 255 for the cost of a Stryd, or a Coros Pace 2 and have £40 spare change, both of those have excellent distance accuracy, and you get power for free.
