Stryd is not all it's cut out to be...maybe

This morning I ran twice with one watch hooked up to a Stryd and set to Always use for Pace and Distance and another just on GPS. In both cases the Stryd came up with a longer distance. First up was a trail run that we've been running for years so we know it is close to 9km. Stryd returned 9.31 where my GPS Trail Run gave 8.99 and my wife's 945 8.97km. Next up was parkrun. For those who don't know, parkrun is always 5km. Our parkrun has been accurately measured using a calibrated wheel so we know it's 5.04km from the wheel. And every GPS run we've done has been 5km +/-20m or so. This morning Stryd gave 5.24km while the GPS watches gave 5.02 and 5.01 respectively.

This wasn't the first time out with the Stryd. Several runs on a 400m track and a couple of other trails runs should have seen it calibrated by now. I haven't looked over earlier runs as I did want to make sure I had a number of different runs with the Stryd.

Let's see how things progress. I have done a couple of runs on a 400m track but not sure if I had the Stryd set up properly so can't comment on that except to say the watches gave the same distance. However, I now have the Stryd where I want it so can. and will, do some more comparison runs to see how this plays out.

  • I really like the stryd as well.  I have the Stryd Live and Stryd II.  I completely agree with their arrogance.  I had a 4.5 mile loop that I ran and would get incredibly consistent results.  It's single-track so you can't deviate hardly at all.  One day, it misreported by 1/3 of a mile which was unusual so I asked them about it.  The support guy (who apparently was one of the originals) was adamant that I had simply shorted myself 1/3 of a mile.   The similarity to your description about their support is uncanny.  I'd switch devices in a heartbeat if someone else had something that worked as well.  But I do like them - particularly on trails.

  • How did you configure your watch to use the GPS for Pace?

Sensors and Accessories> Footpod> Speed = Always, Indoors or Off

  • Ok, that means that the watch will use the built-in algorithm in the watch I guess. And that seem to use both GPS, footpod and accelerometer. So, not only GPS.

  • Well, you can turn the footpod off if you want. Or just have it reporting Running Dynamics and not contributing to pace or distance.

  • I've got similar inconsistancies on my run.

I run just about the same sort of laps everyday, usuaslly a 13.5 km lap which I have been running for years now (also a 7.3 lap if I hava a crappy day).

Stryd seems to be spot on the distance I measured over the years usig gps (either runkeeper and later garmin fenix 6spro) and some days just way overshoots, giving me more miles (and therefore a faster pace I think)

So my 13.5 km lap sometimes clocks in at 13.8 km, same the 7.3 which somethimes clocks in at 7.5.

Seems to be that when I run faster, close to the 4 min/km pace mark, it overestimates.

Thinking of just using stryd for pace and my fenix 6s pro for distance.

just seems a bit odd that the same shoes, same lap give inconsistent results with the same calibration factor (100)

Jut some days it's spot on, some days it's way off.

Could it be the stryd is too loose on my shoe (it can wiggle around a bit) and therefore might bouce about a bit during running or shift sideways?

I do notice sometimes after a run, it's not fully straight, but a bit more diagonal.

I've got it mounted on the lowest two lace crossings, as they describe on their own website.

Have emailed stryd as well just now, let's see how they respond.

  • I changed my calibration factor to 1.06 a few days ago, and it helped a LOT with threadmill running. Distance and pace are spot on now. But seeing as I don't use the Stryd for distance outdoors, I'm not sure if that calibration factor messes up my pace/power outdoors or not. Honestly I don't really care, I don't really use instant pace anyways and I also don't really care what my power number is specifically, just what it is relative to what it normally says, and for that it's been fine.

  • I have the same opinion. And i am using the stuff only for post analysis. It’s not worth at all during running. Even not worth for a better distance than gps. Yes. Can can adjust it with high effort but then you have other issues. And for instant pace? I am always using lap pace. That’s good enough for nearly every situation.

Still disappointed about the device. Very expensive. Does not fulfill what they are promising. And even the support is Bad. But enough complaining Rofl

  • just had a response from stryd support suggestiing it is probably due to me rounding corners different on the same loop..

Like I add 300 meters on a 13500 meters run because i cut the corner different..haha.

I have seen different distances due to rounding corners inside or out and even running on different side of road, but it is always marginal and not even close to the huge difference.

Also replied to them it only seems to do it when I push for a fast lap and pace is lower than avarage.

Replied back that to me that seemed a bit weird, see what they come back with.

  • Have to say, for me stryd support have been very pro-active and responsive so far.

They've asked me to send them some pictures of how the stryd is attached and commented that if it can move around too much, that could affect things.

They also mentioned they want to investigate further, so I have to say, no arrogance so far on my support case and cudos for the quick reply time and willingness to look into this further.

  • Usual 'gaslighting' going on from a Stryd rep. if someone dares suggest they are not accurate..
