New Fenix 6X Pro - Pace completely off, turn by turn navigation not working

Dear Garmin,

I am very fortunate to have been given a Fenix 6X Pro as a present. I wore it on its inaugural trail run today along with my Forerunner 235 for comparison. I have a few questions/concerns.

  1. GPS and displayed pace
  2. Turn by turn navigation
  3. Map
  4. PacePro

GPS and displayed pace

The Fenix frequently reported a pace significantly slower (like 1 - 2 min/km) than the FR, and FR was more correct - I know when I’m running 6min/km and not 8.

Fenix - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/6428825532

FR - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/6430403950

Right from the start (in an open field) the Fenix seems slower off the mark - I immediately started running around 6:30/km but the Fenix took a full minute to get up to this pace. Under any sort of tree cover encountered on much of this run the Fenix seems to fare worse, either underreporting the pace or oscillating in a way that cannot be my realistic pace. It seems a noisier signal.

I am guessing that if GPS signal is lost or weak due to e.g. tree cover, both devices project the pace based on the accelerometer, is this correct? I speculate that maybe the Fenix isn’t yet calibrated to my running so the accelerometer estimate is less reliable. Is this correct, and might I expect it to become more accurate over some time? I have got used to my FR235 applying what I call a “tree penalty” of 30”/km (which hasn't corrected itself over the year I've had it), but today the Fenix 6 penalised me by more than that for much more of the time than the FR.

Turn by turn navigation

I was seriously impressed with the turn-by-turn navigation when I borrowed my partner’s FR 735XT. I loved the way it constantly showed a countdown in metres to each turn and was pretty darn accurate. I was expecting the Fenix to do this but was disappointed. It only intermittently showed a turn arrow when I was quite close, it frequently picked 37m, and did not count down but continued to show 37m right up to the turn or even beyond, as it was late on a lot of the turns and announced it after I had turned. Some of the time it briefly showed a direction arrow then disappeared, leaving me ignorant about how close the next turn was or which direction to turn.

Is it possible to get turn-by-turn navigation to work exactly like the FR735XT?

Map

The map is great on the Fenix 6, a really clear display. But is it not possible to look at the map if I pause my run? The map disappears and I have to resume to see it. Not helpful, when stopped is exactly when I most want to look at the map! Also when running the screen would change from map to a data screen and I had to scroll through many pages to see the map. The default page setup for Trail Run has a lot of screens (like 10) and the map is not anywhere convenient. Is it possible to make the map not disappear when running?

Pace Pro

I was interested to use Pace Pro but this did not work for me when I started the course. Do I have to somehow start the Pace Pro strategy as well as or instead of starting  the course? It’s not at all clear from the instructions what the relation is between courses and pace pro strategies.

I really want to love my new Fenix 6X Pro but so far it has fallen very short of what I expected.
