DND no longer stops gesture backlight

Since the last update, DND mode no longer prevents backlight from turning on with gesture.

Is that a bug or a feature?

Very annoying, especially if you go to bed earlier than your schedule, or if you want to turn off gesture quicklyfor some reason...

  • From a previous beta post (these are Garmin's words below):

Fixed an issue where ‘Do Not Disturb’ prevents gesture backlight from working during the sleep window.

    • Edit, 01/19/21: To clarify, We made this change because the Backlight "During Sleep" setting can now be controlled in a new area. Rather than "Do Not Disturb" automatically disabling the backlight gesture for you, you can manually select what backlight behavior you want to see during your sleep window. Please see the setting options via Menu - System - Backlight - During Sleep. The default for this setting is off, but you can change this if you would like to see the Gesture setting work during your sleep window.
  • It's a horrible new "feature"

I submitted a suggestion to change it back here: www.garmin.com/.../

  • I've had to turn off backlight all together, absolutely horrible change Garmin

  • My settings for 'during sleep' are:

    Keys: On

    Alerts: Off

    Gesture: Off

    'Not During Activity' are:

    Keys: On

    Alerts: On

    Gesture: After Sunset

The result is that the backlight turns on with a gesture after sunset but as soon as DND kicks in (2130 for me) gesture does not activate the Backlight. So in my case DND does stop the Backlight activating with a gesture. Seems to me that you have two issues. The first is that the settings you have currently are not working in which case you should check the settings.

Secondly, you have an issue with 'edge cases' where the settings don't work as you'd like...

especially if you go to bed earlier than your schedule,

How often do you go to be earlier than scheduled? If the answer is often then perhaps you need to change the window.

if you want to turn off gesture quicklyfor some reason.

Set up a Hot Key to take you to the Backlight settings.

  • Wouldn't it be easier if they would allow us to choose whether DND would turn on/off the gesture? It's not just about sleep schedule, as I mentioned there are several situations at least in my day-to-day, which I wouldn't call "edge". Like putting kids to sleep, watching a late night movie/cinema etc.

  • You say DND kicks in at 2130 for you, don't you  mean your sleep schedule? If so, that is not do not disturb, it is your sleep schedule.

My issues, and I think other people's issue really do not have to do with sleep.

The issue for me is I'm awake and active when it is dark outside, and sometimes, NOT ALWAYS, but sometimes, I want the quick option of turning off backlight. I'M NOT SLEEPING, has nothing to do with sleep. Has everything to do with outside light, sometimes I want the backlight and sometimes it is very annoying. Used to be a very easy, couple of button presses to get the light to stay off, it was called do not disturb, now that do not disturb function is worthless

  • Spot on. I have sleep time set up but yesterday I went to bed early.

What I used to do is set the watch to DND and voila, no more backlight.
New situation: trying to fall asleep with a searchlight in the room ;-)

  • You say DND kicks in at 2130 for you, don't you  mean your sleep schedule? If so, that is not do not disturb, it is your sleep schedule.

I have my watch set so DND is active during my sleep window. In other words I elect not be disturbed during my sleep window so it's one and the same. Outside of that DND is off.

I know it is possible to also set DND separately.

  • if you go to bed earlier than your schedule

I'd recommend checking that the Battery Saver power mode has backlight de-activated. Then if you go to bed earlier than scheduled, just turn on Battery Saver (easily done through the Controls menu).

You can still use the backlight with the Light button, if you need to check things in the middle of the night.

I have my Backlight set to 5% during the sleep window. No searchlight. No problem.
