(RESOLVED) - GPS Accuracy Issues Starting January 1st 2021

Fenix 6X Pro - s/w 13.10

My last 2 walking routes seem to be way off the mark when viewed on a map, whether in Garmin Connect or Strava. One had me starting 5 miles away.

Any reason for this? Is the GPS accuracy really bad? Are there any tips to improve accuracy?

Thanks for any assistance.

  • For some reason it locked onto the offset position and didn't change. I can't say for certain whether the GPS changes or the extended period helped - but someone offsite told me that what you did also worked. It take me about 15 mins to work through that procedure so perhaps you're right.

I also just tested it in the garden again and it's still locking correctly Slight smile

As long as it works, I'm happy ;)

I see. As soon as I got a green ring, the screen location kind of "jumped" to my correct location.  I probably had either a better fix or more satellites connected and this happened more quickly for me whereas it may have been delayed much longer for you.

  • Yeah it was odd. I was in a field and it had me marked in a town centre 6 miles away - for a few minutes I walked around the field and watched me walk around the town. Was very odd. Possibly if I'd left it 20 minutes it would probably have cleared but I was annoyed I was going to have to cancel my run :)

  • Well, mine was off 5 1/2 miles less than you, so that could be a reason why mine adjusted quicker too.  Either way, they seem OK now for the both of us.

  • Touch wood!

Yeah, I keep going into the garden and checking the lock.

    I need a life :)

  • I need a life :)

Hire a personal assistant, or a lifestyle manager as some prefer to be called. Lol

  • I wonder if I can pay them to exercise for me!

  • Had the same issues starting with activities on 1/1/2021, including earlier today, 1/3. Did a test walk after switching from GPS+GLONASS to GPS+Galileo, checking EDM file (was marked "current") and after "soaking" my Fenix 6X for 5' per Garmin's recommendation. GPS track was accurate.

  • The best way is to use the attached cable and to make a synchronisation via Garmin Express

    It has no effect

  • I’m not sure if this is related, I haven’t had the watch long enough to establish the familiarity, however why does a Altimeter/Barometer calibration take sooooo long to do (using DEM or GPS), even giving messages like to “go outside where the signal is stronger”, when I’m standing in the exact same position I was in outside 10 seconds earlier with an accurate GPS lock on a Map or Activity screen? Surely the CPE is accurate by that stage or the watch still knows where it is?
