(RESOLVED) - GPS Accuracy Issues Starting January 1st 2021

Fenix 6X Pro - s/w 13.10

My last 2 walking routes seem to be way off the mark when viewed on a map, whether in Garmin Connect or Strava. One had me starting 5 miles away.

Any reason for this? Is the GPS accuracy really bad? Are there any tips to improve accuracy?

Thanks for any assistance.

  • Oops I'm a dirty liar. My Walk activity is set for GPS+Galileo for some reason, but Map is GPS only

  • Tim - does restarting the watch change anything?

  • Tim

Just gave the dog another walk to test the map on the Trail Run activity. It seems to get better with the more lockons. This time lock on was quicker, accuracy better again - I walked him for a good ten minutes to give a mini soak? What happens if you do the full soak and leave it on a window for say ten mins?

  • I tried a sync with GCM over my phone and restarting the 6x Pro, at all times the CPE file has showed as Current.
After the GCM sync, the first time I opened the Walk activity the GPS lock kept cycling between Red and Green but eventually settled down and shows as correct location for now. I tried both Map and Walk screens, both set to GPS (Map was originally GPS + GLONASS) and both seem ok now.

  • Yeah - I wonder if perhaps the first CPE's were still a little broken and a fresh sync replaced them again?

  • Oh well thats good! Hopefully my next trail run won't throw up the same initial 1K difficulty

  • I’m going to go for a walk and see what happens, to be honest, I’ve only had the watch for a week and was already less than impressed with the GPS accuracy, my Edge 510/530 (with Sony chip) were both very accurate and fast with GPS + GLONASS locks, the Edge 500 before them not so good, but the fenix is very slow in comparison. I have a Samsung Galaxy watch, my daughters Apple watches and even my Galaxy S9 all give better GPS traces than the fenix. Considering the fenix is a dedicated sports watch from a GPS leader and costs considerably more, I’m a little disappointed so far.

Went for a walk yesterday (before I knew of this issue) and the GPS+GLONASS trace was all over the place, tried a GPS only activity and it was almost perfect, so am going to run with that for a while and see what happens. Just strange that my Edge 530 performs so much better.

  • I think the key is finding whether GPS, GPS+GLONASS or +Galileo works best for your location. I really havent had that much issue with GPS but the caveat here is I run trails in wide open spaces.

In my experiments all three settings were much of a muchness for me, so I stuck with GPS only simply for battery. I've had the odd weird trace here and there but overall for me it's been ok. YMMV of course.

  • Just went for a 30 minute walk, the activity started and stopped in the correct position and tracked perfectly the whole way.

I guess we will see what happens in a few days when the CPE file gets refreshed.

  • Interestingly enough did a 2h 15m ice skate at 2pm MST and had zero issues with the 20km skate, and then went for a walk at 9pm and had 800m error show up. Neither activity has special time to 'settle', waited for green and hit Go.

Sad to see this as just got the F6 Sapphire for Christmas ... now not sure if I should be getting it refunded while I can.
