Sprint suggestions - what do they mean?

Hi  I get a suggestion

2x4x0:10@2:45/km

What does this mean ? The entire workout should last 49 minutes (tells me the suggestion )

  • Who knows maybe with gallelio over the next few years the shorter stuff will improve

While that might help, as might having access to other satellite groups, there’s too much happening at once to expect any reasonable outcome for a short sprint. Your body is accelerating. Your arm is moving backwards (reducing the relative pace) and forward (increasing the relative pace) all while tracking a number of satellites whizzing around in space. Add even more satellite data into the mix and there’s even more load being placed on a little processor on a wrist watch.

There’s no point trying to follow numbers either pace or heart rate in a short duration sprint. Just sprint!

  • I have a similar suggestion today [email protected]. So I need to do 2 lots of 3x0.15 sprints. But what breaks do I have in between? Why not just 6 lots of sprints instead of 2x3?

Sorry it’s not very clear. Thanks

  • My suggestion is 3x3x0:15@3:10/km for 55min.

Looking at the steps for this, it shows:

    Warm-up 15:00 6:05/km

    Run 0:15 3:10/km

    Rest 3::00

    Repeat 2-3 3x

    Recover 5:00 7:10/km

    Repeat 2-5 3x

    Cool Down 10:00 6:05/km

  • If it really, really, matters to you then get a Stryd, it's about as accurate as you're ever going to get with current tech.   But it has to matter at least $200 worth.

It's a fair bit better than GPS out of the box and extremely accurate after you've done a calibration run in the shoes you want to use most of the time.  Stack height does change the distance.  Not by much and not noticeable on this sprint type distance but if you want it as balls on accurate as possible then a calibration run or two is needed to dial it into that 99.x% accuracy rating.

For a 15s sprint it's not going to make $200 worth of difference. There simply is not enough time to focus on any metric other than going hard.

I had the same question today.  I got the suggestion immediately when I clicked the start button for a run.  What I did was just start the run, and it walked me through the workout.  The watch prompted me to run a 15 minute warmup (11:10 minute mile, for my workout), then start the intervals.  10 second sprints at the suggested pace, separated by 3 minute rests at a jogging pace (according to my workout).  Mine was 1x5x0:10, so I did five sprints that lasted 10 seconds each.  Then it gave me a 5 minute rest, then five more intervals (hence the 2x).  After the second set I had a ten minute cool down, again a jogging pace.  That's why the entire workout seems long, because of the warm up, cool down, and rest in between the two sets.  Plus the 3 minute rest seemed like a lot at first, since the sprints were only 10 seconds.  But it was a challenging workout.

  • 55min.

    Repeat 2-5 3x

I am just ahead completing the first Suggestion which is about anaerobic load. And I wondered quite a lot how the hell I should interprete it. Because of that I am now in a delay of one hour vs my original plan. :-)

Finally I used the total time to figure out how “Repeat 2-3” and “Repeat 2-5” should be interpreted.

I guess on the first hand Garmin created a small difficulty, because it does not use the explicit numbering in case of steps. All the steps description should start with a number. But it is just a small non-elegance.

The second, and the main problem for me was that for me the convention “2-5” means 2 and 3 and 4 and 5. At least it is the convention in my language. And it is so in maths afaik. And it does not mean 2 and 5.

But if you interpreted the suggestion in the former way then you would create a quite complicated workout in which an inner cycle of a sprint of 0.15 min and a rest of 3 mins cycle would be embedded within an outer cycle where each outer cycle would end with a recover of 5 mins, and you should repeat the outer cycle thrice. Meaning you would do the inner cycle 9 times and this would mean 9 sprints.

But the total time said by Garmin contradicts this interpretation, so forget what is written exactly, let’s be flexible!

Thus 2-5 means 2 and 5. So 6 sprints have to be made.

But even in this case the total time calculated by Garmin not exactly equals to the sum of the time of the steps, but it is at least close to it.

  • I almost forgot it, but there is more problem with the wording of the suggestion.

If you have to do something, like complete X and Y, and after that you are said you have to repeat it three times, than you have to complete X and Y four times since the first completion is not a “repeat”.

Either a “Repeat sthing 2x (more)” or “Do sthing 3x”.

But maybe I am just stuck to maths overly.

  • I am back from the workout.

More critics I have as regards Garmin’s laxity.

Although the Suggestion says you have to repeat 2-3 three times, the step no 3 (rest of 3 mins) is requested only after the 1st and 2nd sprints. So there is no “Repeat 2-3 3x” done.

Instead after the 3rd sprint comes the recovery of 5 mins (=step 5), while after 4st and 5th sprints there is again a rest of 3 mins. So it has nothing to do “Repeat 2-5 3x” . Certainly after the 6th sprint there is no rest/recovery, just the Cooldown.

Conclusion: while the steps during the real workout are logical, the detailed description of Workout Suggestion is full with inaccuracy.
