Is it possible to see one or two decimals for VO2 Max?

Anyone know if its possible? I think that it would be a nice feature to see progress at decimal level so we can easier track the improvements in our training.

  • In Garmin connect or the fenix is not possible. You can use your vo2max age to get half of point values. However, at least sports track gets the decimal from Garmin so they are there they just doesn't show.

  • It is available in the FIT file and one free platform that shows it with decimals is Runalyze:

  • Great! Do you know in which .FIT file the VO2 Max value is located? Cant find it in mine .FIT files from running activities.

  • Yeah, i know the decimals are located somewhere but i dont know where to find them. It would be nice to have an widget or app that shows it in more detail.

  • 2 decimal points is probably a false level of precision, but 1 decimal place would at least give some good context if you were bouncing between say, 48.4 and 48.6 from run to run.

  • Do you know in which .FIT file the VO2 Max value is located?

It is in the file unique for every activity. If you connect the watch to your computer locate the Activities folder. You can also export the original file from Garmin Connect (web).

    BUT...

With Runalyze, just as Strava and many other platforms, you can configure an automatic sync with Garmin. With that in place you don't need to bother about the files.

  • 2 decimal points is probably a false level of precision

I agree but that is how Garmin stores the data. One thing that bothered me before noticing the VO2 Max value in Runalyze was that I sometimes got a performance indication on the watch saying that my training was ineffective but I still had the same VO2 according to Garmin Connect. Now, with the decimals, I know why.

  • With the VO2 a bit of an 'arbitrary' measurement in this context, will a decimal value actually be materially significant?

  • No, probably not. But since other indicators such as Training Status use VO2 it explains why you sometimes get a negative indication on fitness but still see the same value for VO2 in Garmin Connect.

  • Hmm, i have checked my .FIT files for my activities but i cant find the VO2 Max in them. Didnt find it in the SDK either. Do you know what the data field is called in the .FIT files? And how the data is stored in the files? Maybe Runalyze and Strava calculates the VO2 based on heart bpm etc.
