Wait for 7 and buy 6. When 7 comes out - 6 will (should) be out of beta testing and have somewhat stable software.
And 6 will be cheaper when 7 comes out.
Signs in general point to it still being a while before the Fenix 7 will be released, I have no insider information, just speculation, but hear me out:
1. Garmin released the Fenix 5, then a year later…
go for the 6

Agree unless: Garmin expands the solar capability to actually charge the device in the 7 series. In the 6 Pro Solar, the solar charging capability is nearly useless.
Thank you guys I'm getting the 6X sapphire.
I'm currently using matrix powerwatch 2 it's good but so limited and inaccurate readings and light doesn't work which is so important to me.
I used to have apple watch which only lasted 3 months then screen broken. I didn't like its durability neither battery life.
Fenix 22 seems much better.
You should wait.
I think the 6 is an awesome bit of gear with loads of functions and features and the only thing I'd be waiting for would be wireless charging. Not sure if the "7" would have that, doubt it, so go with the 6 and get some use out of it. Garmin do not add functionality to older devices even when they may support it so that is also a consideration. Lastly, expect the 7 to be about $200 more than the 6 if history is anything to go by.
Signs in general point to it still being a while before the Fenix 7 will be released, I have no insider information, just speculation, but hear me out:
1. Garmin released the Fenix 5, then a year later they released the Fenix 5 Plus
2. Garmin released the Fenix 5 Plus 3 months after the 945
3. Garmin waited 14 months after releasing the Fenix 5 Plus to release the Fenix 6
4. Garmin released the MARQ 6 months before the Fenix 6
5. Garmin released a "refresh" of the Fenix 6 only a month ago in the form of the 6s and 6 solar. Seems like it would be strange for Garmin to release a Fenix 7 while many Fenix 6 Solar purchasers are still withing their return period.
6. Garmin has not released a new MARQ nor a Forerunner 955 yet. I don't expect a new MARQ anytime soon, but the 955 might be more likely
7. There haven't been any rumors of Forerunner 955 nor Fenix 7 release dates. At least none that I've seen; please educate me if you have!
8. The new Sony dual-band GPS chip was released in August 2020, it takes a fair amount of time to integrate a new chipset (no idea if Garmin will use this new chipset, but given the problems Garmin has had with the current line of Sony GPS chipsets I am guessing they'll want to use the upgrade.)
9. Coros Pace 2 is really nice and Garmin may want to react to that device, so it may have set them back a bit as they make changes to unreleased products
10. Garmin's ransomware attack plus Covid probably has delayed and continues to mess with R&D as well as manufacturing and logistics
11. In the last 3 years, I haven't seen Garmin release a major wearable between September and the following January
Sometimes Garmin will discount their older products $100-$150 for a month or two before releasing a new watch. You can't count on this but in the last 2 years it's been a pretty good guide. IIRC, Fenix 5 Plus was discounted $150 for Father's Day and then just stayed on sale, so if the Black Friday sales on the Fenix 6 are really good, that could be an indication.
I'm guessing that either a 945 Solar and/or a 955 will be released before the Fenix 7. If the 955 is released with something substantially new, like dual-band GPS, or LTE, or an OLED screen or something else "big", then I would guess that the Fenix 7 will be coming along relatively soon after since Garmin will have most of the work done on the 955. BUT if Garmin only releases a 945 Solar or 955 comes out and it is a minor refresh of the 945 with only Solar or running power or something small like that, then I would guess that the Fenix 7 will still be a while longer -- particularly if Garmin back-ports features from the 955 to the Fenix 6.
In my opinion, Garmin will need to bring Fenix 7 with ECG to market soon. Not because the ECG feature is in demand, but simply because market will otherwise label Garmin Fenix brand as one unable to compete with other smart watches (since Apple 6 and Samsung watches already have it).
