Skin burn

Hi all

I’m getting skin burns exactly where the led lights sit on my  wrists. I see I’m not the only one.. rather worried this can cause further problem. I have a fenix 6x Saphire

Same thing happened to me with my Phenix 5 and I can only turn on the heart monitor for short periods while I exercise or it will happen again... there is a skin condition called polymorphic light eruption or PLE that some people have a tendency to develop that I believe is the issue.

  • Have experienced the same problem once with my 5+, this was after a 3-4 hour indoor spinning session.

Haven't had the problem since, but have also started washing and drying the watch after sport.

  • I used to have a problem like this when I wore cheap watches as a child many years ago. I assumed it was a reaction to nickel.

I wear the fenix 6x sapphire and have worn fenix watches 3, 5x and 5×+ before the 6x and have never had this prolem. I wear the watches day and night and do most types of training using the rubber, leather and steel straps. I have never had an issue with these watches.

I recommend not wearing the watch for a week and recover the area. Clean the watch and watch your wrist after  workouts. Perhaps wear it a little loser if still comfortable. Try changing writs but i admit I don't find it comfortable on the opposite.

I hope you feel better soon

  • I have the fenix 6 solar and I wear this day and night. I run, bike, and lift weights. It doesn't get hot enough to do that. I don't get any mark whatsoever.

  • No skin burns here. I do get a round pressure point/mark because I wear it snug during activities.

    Really?

"PMLE is caused by a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to a compound in the skin that is altered by exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR)."

    Where's the UV light source?

  • Indeed, people who think this is caused by the light are not really thinking this through.

The LEDs are green, they are nowhere near the UV spectrum. Even the PulseOX LEDs are red and infrared, on totally the opposite end of the light spectrum from UV.

From Garmin's FAQ, quoted below, they are saying you could even stare directly into the LEDs with your eyes and there is zero risk. So it's safe to assume that your skin can handle it, too.

What kind of light is being used to trigger the Pulse Ox feature?

The Pulse Ox LEDs are emitting various wavelengths of red and infrared light.  It is not a laser and poses no issues for skin contact or direct viewing.

  • Not a burn.  People even say that in the other thread.  It is an irritation.
