Charging issues question

My new Fenix 6s seems to have a loose connection where the cable attaches.  Should I be able to wiggle the charger while it is connected to the watch?   Mine has quite a bit of play in it and if it moves at all the charging connection is broken and charging ceases.  Like I said, the watch is new (purchased mid April) and I was using the cable that came with it.  I contacted Garmin and they sent me a new cable.  It is also doing the same thing.

Before I contact Garmin about replacing the watch, I'd like to know if this is expected or if there is actually a defect with my watch.

I appreciate any feedback you can provide.

Thanks!

  • Ouch! I didn't get that far. £6 for one, £8 for two, including next delivery in the UK with Amazon Prime. Sorry.

    eBay?

  • Contact Garmin as they sent me a replacement cable a few months ago as mine stopped charging/connecting to the PC.

Somewhat normal unfortunately after they changed to the plug in connectors with the 5's and that year of garmin's. While I'm not encouraging anyone to do this, I've fixed it on aftermarket cables by very slightly bending the metal shroud on the cable end so it's a tighter fit.

  • Hi,

today after only 3 weeks I had the same problem, had this problem too with one Fenix 6s Pro watch a half year back that I returned back because of this.

It is VERY loose and wiggles back and forth. I haven't found this to be problem before, I don't know what happened. I tried the new and unused USB cable it came with. Same problem. My F245m also wiggles a tiny bit but I own this watch for several months and it is way less, almost not at all. I guess the concept of this charging port is not the best at all, they should consider a new/different one. But with my 6S now it really is bad.

I guess I have to sent it back, I got the 6S for a good price but as this is the second 6S (Pro) that has this problem I think I will stay away from the Fenix line for the time being. Love the watch besides that, FW10.00 made good improvements, esp on sleep and HR. Screen of the watch is also better than the 6S before that I tried. Not black but better. But the charging port is really loose. Not good at all. Can't use it like this for months or years, charging is already pausing/stopping when moving the cable a bit.

  • I swear by these

It's normally not the port thats lose, but the cable pins have flexed. You can tell because the port is a fixed part, if it does wiggle, the waterproof will be compromised. I agree the charging design is a real weak point as it relies too much on grip.

  • But I tried a brand new original cable, it came with but still packaged, it is as loose as with the used original cable from my F245m. + My F245m is way older and only a tiny bit loose. So it has to be a watch defect. But you think it is the pins? Even worse, as those could break or am I wrong here? I mean if they are already totally loose after 3 weeks of use...

Yeah I have seen those cables but I am one of those persons who only use original cables and charing adapters. Just to be on the safe side...

  • The pins on the cable are not anchored like the ones on the watch. On the watch, they're set in a resin.  Zoom in and look. They're not going to break off.

So the design is bad, but from the cable side I feel. Thats why I use the puck connectors, they keep a stable connection. All it could take is a sub-mm wiggle on the cable to make a dodgy connection.

The loose cable wiggle is the result of lateral movement as the cable sits in the port. Thats where I think the poor design is, and why Garmin should have produced their own puck design - it's what they did for the 3 series

  • I contacted Garmin support and they sent me a new cord.  I continued to have some issues with the new cord for about a week but then It cleared up. I have no charging issues now. Might be worth contacting support and giving it a bit of time if you really like the watch. I’m glad I did.

  • One thing is to occasionally clean the port with a cotton wool bud regularly. Due to it's location, it can get a little full of skin cruft and a quick rinse and dry does wonders for me.
