I am trying to figure out what the benefits would be given how much the watch already does. The HRM is expensive and I just want to make sure it will provide enough of an added benefit.

If you want to record heart rate when swimming then you need either the HRM-TRI or HRM-SWIM. Both of these will collect your heart rate while swimming and then transfer it to your watch once you stop.…
Defo go with the Tri, I went through about 3 Run’s in 2 years. Every single time it was the same thing, the rubber on the electrodes wore off with the sweat and the black tape on the end cracked/split…
Garmin markets the Tri as (not surprisingly) being for running, cycling and (especially) swimming. This is because it has "memory" -- it can record your HR with your watch out of range and then send it back to the watch later on. It's useful for swimming because water blocks the ANT+ signal, so even if the watch is on your wrist, the signal will go in and out (depending on your stroke). But it's also useful for where you can't wear a watch -- I use it for soccer and climbing and it works well. One downside is that the electronics are integrated into the strap itself so, unlike with the HRM-Run, you can't pop off the electronics and machine wash the strap.
I have worn out a couple of HRM-RUN. Now I use the HRM-TRI and it seems it's much more durable.
And of course, if you're interested in actually useful HR data during workouts, you need a strap.
Defo go with the Tri, I went through about 3 Run’s in 2 years. Every single time it was the same thing, the rubber on the electrodes wore off with the sweat and the black tape on the end cracked/split. Admittedly I was using it 4/5 times a week for some serious workouts. However I have had the Tri for coming up to 3 years now and some of the black tape is only just becoming loose which for £79 is fantastic value.
Plus, the memory is a godsend when I am doing my BJJ workouts
That's exactly how my HRM-RUNs broke too.
The TRI seems like a MUCH better value.
I have the Garmin Varia RTL 510 taillight that I always use on my bicycle.
I mount the Garmin on my handlebar to see the radar indications, the cars/vehicle/cyclists that are approaching from behind.
as I swim as well, the trisport HRM was a must...and works without problems.
I have the swim HRM (the one for pools) as well.
just me,
