I am trying to figure out what the benefits would be given how much the watch already does. The HRM is expensive and I just want to make sure it will provide enough of an added benefit.

If you want to record heart rate when swimming then you need either the HRM-TRI or HRM-SWIM. Both of these will collect your heart rate while swimming and then transfer it to your watch once you stop.…
Defo go with the Tri, I went through about 3 Run’s in 2 years. Every single time it was the same thing, the rubber on the electrodes wore off with the sweat and the black tape on the end cracked/split…
Well, if you like to have accurate heart rate and 6 running dynamics metrics: cadence, stride length, ground contact time, ground contact time balance, vertical oscillation and vertical ratio.
And Power
and onboard memory for when you lose ant+ signal when swimming
Power?
Ha, thanks everyone for the quick replies. I had a HRM with my last Forerunner but just got the fenix so I wasn't sure. It seems the general consensus is that it is worth it. I dont do very much swimming but I do a lot of running and cycling.

Both of these will collect your heart rate while swimming and then transfer it to your watch once you stop. The HRM-Tri also has the full suite of running dynamics too. If you only want running dynamics then just a HRM-Run would do. If you just want heart rate then the HRM-Dual will do that without the running dynamics but does also transmit a bluetooth signal.
Either way, if you want accurate reliable heart rate date during activities you will need a strap. Optical heart rate is fine for normal day-to-day use (mind you some would say otherwise) but not good for activities.
Add Running Power via a CIQ app with the use of the strap.
I bought a HRM-RUN for running and cycling. I don't swim, so I don't need the HRM to be able to record data when it can't send it. That's really all the TRI does over the RUN, will record data when you're swimming and it can't transmit it to the watch (ANT and BT don't work under water)
If you can accept the HR data the watch gives you from your wrist when you swim, then save money and get a HRM-RUN
Yes I know that. Thought you meant it came from the strap directly.

No, it's not just limited to swimming. There are many sports one can do where you're unable to wear a watch while participating, ie, soccer, martial arts, rugby, basketball, etc. just to name a few, where the activity can be recorded using the Tri and then download the data later.
