Wrong Wrist heart rate without starting activity

For activities like cyclists, my Fenix only shows the right pulse when I start an activity on the watch. If I don't do this, the pulse will remain 40-50 beats below the actual pulse.
Why is that so, someone can enlighten me.

  • Or it would be better that others test and report the issue, too ;)

I have reported this issue in august 2019, after beta firmware 2.64 for the FR945 messed up WHR outside of activity. After a month Garmin replied that they had replicated the issue and were working on a fix. Since then I swapped my FR945 for a F6Pro and experienced and reported the exact same unreliable WHR outside of activity. It’s been 7 months and I don’t think this will be fixed ever. If you want reliable HR outside of activity mode: get a Fitbit (every Fitbit with a HR sensor does a better job at 24/7 HR tracking) or get a Polar or get an Apple Watch.

How about Garmin lets US decide if we want the higher battery drain and give US the choice of selecting better WHR outside of activity?

    +1

  • I'm afraid I disagree with this. Users should not be given the choice because there should not be a need to make a choice.

All day heart rate should be correct 24x7, subject to realistic limitations of OHR technology. If it is not correct then it is not heart rate data at all - it is just noise and random numbers. And so much other information depends on heart rate that lowering standards for accuracy makes everything else worthless.

As for battery life, no reason to set expectations lower in order to have accurate HR values. Battery life should be as advertised and heart rate data should be correct. No other options are necessary.

  • +1 and Garmin needs to do this ASAP

  • Yes, it is possible to broadcast HR during activities.

No, I do not use the Abnormal HR detection feature.

However, I took a quick walk today during lunch without starting an activity. MoveIQ detected this as elliptical (wrong) and I had a nice peak in HR at 135. So again: I am not experiencing this issue. (FW 7.78)

Ok, I found it in the manual. Anyway it is strange that simply broadcasting from the widget have the issue, this is an implementation that they can solve very easily. (I will never use it, to be more clear, but I think that for somebody else could be interesting).

I have not the possibility to do this test at the moment because the Coronavirus but I will do it as soon as possible.

Probably the issue appear during ciclyng because Move IQ cannot understand that I am doing a sport?

Could you retry during cycling or (better) a spinning bike?

Could you retry walking or (better) running but with Move IQ disabled?

Thanks if you will do the test, this will be very useful to understand together the nature of the issue.

If you have an HR strap band and you can connect it to another device during the test this will help you to check if there is or not the issue.

  • Why would I spend a lot of time and effort doing that if I do not experience any of the issues? I am not the one having problems here..

EDIT: To clarify. The ones with problems should of course contact Garmin about this issue so that they can conduct whatever tests they need to reproduce and eventually fix the issue.

  • You don't have to do it, I'm kindly asking you to do it to understand why you don't have the problem while I do.

It is called solidarity and in my opinion it is better than fighting against each other to define who is right
