No GPS fix, CPE file missing again

After a period of functioning normally last GPS track had a flaw in it. Did not give it to much attention but after starting an activity yesterday I noticed that the watch fails to get a GPS fix.

There is a CPE file on the watch (checked this) but the watch says it is missing. Tried the soak thing but that did not help. Had this problem before. That time the watch started functioning normally after lots of resets. I don't want to go in to this procedure again because it would mean losing all settings again.

Any suggestions to get the CPE file loaded again?

  • Plug your watch to a computer and try to sync with GE. Normally it will clean CPE.bin errors.

The best would be if you could manually delete CPE.bin before the sync. But if it is not allowed due to file corruption, even in that case there is a high chance of cleaning the corrupt file during the sync.

Maybe you have to wait for a succesful cpe update until CPE will expire, which is around 14 days later than its timestamp.

  • I did those a few times, plugged into desktop deleted the RemoteSW folder, and connected to GE, and saw the new CPE.bin there with updated time stamp, went in and out of service menu, nothing worked. Soaked GPS for 30mins outside....It was working fine for 2 months, then a GPS firmware update then things start going weird. In the main garmin folder there is a O_FILE.ERR inside it says File Open 0: /Garmin/RemoteSW/CPE.bin and like 10 of those exact line, i think whatever that GPS firmware updated did, it can't open the CPE file inside the watch.

  • Sorry for hearing it.

Have you tried to do a sort of enforced sw/fw update? One which includes the latest gps fw too?

Afaik gps sw cannot be downgraded even if you try to install an earlier sw release including not the latest gps fw, but maybe the reinstall of the very same gps fw helps.

  • i meant trying to do a system “backdate” (which is in fact would be not a backdate, but the identical sw) after downloading the package of sw 25.10 which includes 25.00, too, here forums.garmin.com/.../alpha-version-25-10

  • I think if the GPS software version 5.50 is reinstalled it should resolve the issue, would you by any chance know if installing the 25.10 would also reinstall the GPS software 5.50? I will try to look for the instruction on how to install that update as well, oooo one thing, mine is an enduro not a Fenix, wonder if it would matter.

  • Dunno, Garmin has made enough mistakes until now, but it should be 5.50, otherwise it should be written on the link below. Read carefully what you find on the link I inserted.

My strategy would be a reinstall of 25.00, because a downgrade or an identical sw install seem to clean/erase more things. So more PITA for you, but higher chance that a corrupted thingamy will be wiped out.

    Sure, Enduro matters.

Check the link and click on the word Enduro and not on Fenix 6. ;-) And you will be  the master of ceremony. :-)

Pls let us know after your install!

  • I was making a GPX file, and it said the 25.10 is ready to update via Connect or Explore, which i did, and still CPE Missing haha, i cleared out the old RemoteSW folder, and restarted the watch, went inside service menu and exited that....still missing....Software version is now 25.10....I guess the GPS software was not updated or reinstalled, only the main operating software....Still havent heard back from Support's email...

  • My final question, and from now on I let the Support solve it:  was there anything for your against re-installing 25.00 instead of updating to 25.10?

As I implied all your settings would have been erased if you had opted for 25.00, while updating to any newer sw meant a much simpler process. I did not say that the former would have been the crazy situation you have, but nevertheless even Support likes official releases being on the watch during their “helping process”

  • Hi, Nothing against the 25.00, i just didnt know upgrading the 25.10 wouldn't reinstall the GPS software, and that was the quickest option, and thought i will have to upgrade to 25.10 anyway in the future, so if i reinstall the 25.00, and upgrade the 25.10 could potentially break the GPS firmware again, so might be a wiser choice to first upgrade to 25.10, then reinstall it again if needed, to atleast make sure the 25.10 works fine. Otherwise i could fix it, upgrade and break it again haha.

So it potentially mean i can just reinstall the 25.10 and it would still 'hopefully' reinstall the GPS and wipe something out? Because Garmin support has still not responded to my email yet...So i might have to do a GPS firmware reinstall/ or 25.10 reinstall.

  • would you by any chance know if installing the 25.10 would also reinstall the GPS software 5.50?

The last GPS update of the GPS firmware (V 5.50) was in the Alpha 22.76, as far as I know.
So if you want to reinstall this firmware, then download the alpha and copy the file contained there to your clock. But attention: There are two versions included. The also included version 6.30 is not an update to version 5.50. Please note and install only the 5.50.
