No GPS fix, CPE file missing again

After a period of functioning normally last GPS track had a flaw in it. Did not give it to much attention but after starting an activity yesterday I noticed that the watch fails to get a GPS fix.

There is a CPE file on the watch (checked this) but the watch says it is missing. Tried the soak thing but that did not help. Had this problem before. That time the watch started functioning normally after lots of resets. I don't want to go in to this procedure again because it would mean losing all settings again.

Any suggestions to get the CPE file loaded again?

Actually there are two CPE files right now. Both of today. Uploaded one.

    • should only be one, how did you get CPE(1).BIN ?
    • content should be region linked, difficult to compare
    • file header looks the same as mine
    • am going to put yours on my watch - CPE is current , so your file is ok
    • on your watch in the GARMIN folder there is a file called garmindevice.xml
      • open with text editor or xml editor
      • search for CPE and check the folder just above
      • is it GARMIN/REMOTESW ? like below

    - Yes disabled all but the base map. I have to do this for each activity right? No other maps than that are on the watch by default.

    • I gues just for the activity which you are going to use to get a GPS fix for
    • disable all but one (not basemap) (guess this map thingy was just a fluke from the poster)
    • other test - disable all maps and check

    - Tried many hard resets. Time won't sync. Only one red segment on the outer ring shows.

    • you did put the watch outside or one a windowsill for at least twenty minutes (gps soaking) ?
    • with an active activity like bike

    - Already tried without Bluetooth. No solution unfortunately.

    • ok

    - Software v7.77, GPS 2.8 (!), wifi v2.60, ciq v3.1.7, bmx v0.5.2, whr v20.04.70, ant/ble/bt v4.3, sensor hub v.5.05.

    • Slight smile same unknwon gps 2.80(!)
    • otherwise all numbers look fine

one more ... check your gmaptz.img in the GARMIN folder

    • replace with this one and upload yours here zipped Slight smile
    • gmaptz.zip

Actually there are two CPE files right now. Both of today. Uploaded one.

you deleted the existing CPE.BIN in the REMOTESW folder on your watch

you did put my version in the REMOTESW folder

you checked in the about menu for the CPE state

    and the state was ?

  • is it GARMIN/REMOTESW ? like below

    Yes

    4861.gmaptz.zip

Here is my gmaptz. What is the purpose of this file? Copied you file to my watch.

Last time i connected by usb there was only one CPE file. Unfortunately no luck with your CPE file either. Still soaking but looks like it does not work...

gmaptz.img corrects time linked to different time zones

    file looks ok, both compared

Unfortunately no luck with your CPE file either.

    it showed missing ? or...

one more ... delete the REMOTESW folder

    • disconnect the watch...it re-creates the fodler by itself
    • connect the watch
    • check if the REMOTESW folder is there
    • not there ... create it by yourself
    • sync with Garmin Express

one more ... go into service menu and leave... makes the watch do another restart

    • turn your watch off, the normal way Slight smile
    • press and hold the down button until a beep or a menu appears
      • while pressing, press the light button once, a garmin triangle should appear
    • you can scroll through the different windows by pressing the back button
    • you can leave the service menu by a long press on the light button
    • turn the watch back on
    • check gps fix

    happy & safe sporting

  • Thanks for checking the file. Yes watch is still showing cpe missing. Will try erasing remotesw tomorrow and post results.

    Thanks!

your mishap from a month ago Slight smile

Unfortunately did encounter a problem today. Logged an MTB activity. Fenix distance showed 30 km less than Edge (85 km total). Tracks seemed largely identical. No clue how distance can be off by such margin :-(

looks like you are back with the same problem

would be best to go the Garmin Support route and try to get an RMA

or one more ... to install GPS firmware again or a previous 2.70 version ?

  • Tried a few more things, gave it a reset. Still no luck. Will have to send it in :-(

    Thanks for all the suggestions.
