How to safely charge Fenix 6

I currently charge my Fenix 6S using the USB output on my computer at work. But it takes ages to fully charge. Does the watch support "fast charging" and if so what wall charger can I safely use? I don't want to shorten the lifespan of the battery hence why I have been slow charging until now. Will a Samsung 240v - 5v adapter be safe to use?

  • I have a Garmin Fenix 6S Pro and the cable didn't connect very well anymore. It would not charge reliably.

So, I finally bought a new cable from Garmin and it now charges, but the Garmin support recommends 5W 5V/1A as higher fast charging USB like the 2A Samsung charger will cause the watch to start then stop charging.

The story that the cable and watch will manage the power level is reported to be not so true as I have found even with the new cable.

So, I have a cable from my workstation that comes to the top of my desk and provides 1A and charges the Fenix 6S Pro fabulously.

Must be something about the cable and watch that doesn't follow what it should do and it has never charged except for 30 seconds with 2A chargers, right from brand new, it was finicky.

  • I read some reports from support and the forum that the watch will stop charging when you plug into a 2Amp USB as it registers as too high power. I had this and it would eventually charge, but not reliably at all.

So, I now have a cable to my workstation which is not fast charging and that connects instantly and charges quickly and reliably.

I also bought a brand-new cable form Garmin and that solved the problem that the old cable was no longer connecting to charge or sync.

Nonsense.  The watch controls the amount of current pulled from the USB charger.  Fast chargers have the capability to charge at higher voltages above the standard 5V USB voltage, but requires communication from the device being charged to jump to the higher voltage.  You can plug your watch into any USB charging source.  Read all of the support page.

    • Lithium ion batteries prefer to live between a charge of 80 and 20% as it is less stressful on the battery.

This point should be given more attention if you want to treat the battery well.

  • While it is nonesense, it is a fact and others have experienced this. Maybe these folks and me got faulty watches, but Garmin Support say recommended and another post says the fast charges will in many cases cause the watch to respond to the higher amperage be stopping charging...
And Yes, Garmin support may say this and reality which a lot of folks don't believe in is the Samsung 2 Amp fast charger and even the Apple iPod charge won't work.
I'm ordering a 5V 1A charger in case my desktop USB 2.0 decides to not work for this silly expensive device... Maybe when I get my Fenix 8 it will actually work..

Is There a Recommended Power Output Level That I Should Use?

The Garmin recommended output from one of the suggested power sources above is 5W (5V / 1A). Anything used that exceeds this recommendation (E.g. A fast/rapid chargers) will be regulated by the Garmin cable and device. Anything lower may result in a slower charging experience.

The above is very valid and some Fenix watches won't charge with a fast charger, just a fact, not nonsense. Be polite.
