Pool swim style detection bug..need help to repro on Fenix!

Hi guys,
long story short, i have documented an extensive 3-way test of few watches back in this thread:
https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/healthandwellness/f/vivoactive-4-series/196306/new-va4---live-review

From my findings, the VA4 and Venu suffer from a strange bug (among others) reg. pool swimming:
https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/healthandwellness/f/vivoactive-4-series/196306/new-va4---live-review/960595#960595

- if you start swimming breaststroke, nothing is recorded
- if you switch to front crawl, it detects the crawl
(example: 10 laps: first 4 breaststroke not detected, last 6 crawl detected)

- if you start swimming crawl, it detects
- if you switch to breaststroke, it detects!
(example: 10 laps: first 4 crawl detected, last 6 breaststroke detected)

Detection issue is not limited to a single device, because i had the same both with Vivoactive 4 and with a Venu. Same SW 3.50 at the time.
Detection issue is not due to my stroke style, because it picks up after starting with freestyle

Can anyone with a Fenix pls. test and try to repro this? Thx.

  • here are 2 sessions i did today to exemplify the issue. I swam as i normally do, no change in stroke style, etc...

    1) 4x25m: first 2 breaststroke, last 2 freestyle

    connect.garmin.com/.../4379338983

    2) 4x25m: first 2 freestyle, last 2 breaststroke

    connect.garmin.com/.../4379356883

  • In your sessions you always change style during the same rep. What happen if you do a rest before change style?

I swam only with firmware 4.20 and I had not issue but I never changed style as you.

    connect.garmin.com/.../4230390211

  • if i do a rest, the algorithm resets and it behaves again from zero: start breaststroke - not detected, start freestyle - detected, then switch to breaststroke - detected. Any rest (as in press lap button) resets the behavior.

I have opened a ticket with Garmin on this. I saw it on 3 devices already (Venu, VA4, Fenix 6) and it can't be my swim style, it's a detection algorithm calibration issue.

  • I thought I'd never seen this issue before and I often start my pool swim intervals with breaststroke, before switching to front crawl.  So I confirmed this morning, with my 6X Pro Solar on 5.72 beta, I'm simply not seeing this issue.  I have my reasons for not wanting to make my Connect links public at the moment, but the screen shots of my swim this morning clearly show every Interval starting with breaststroke and the stroke type has been correctly detected after that for every length through the whole swim (after my warmup of a few alternate breaststroke/front crawl lengths, I settle in to rotating through one length breaststroke then 3 lengths front crawl).

I can't explain why you have the issue you describe when starting an interval with breaststroke, but it clearly isn't an issue impacting everyone.

  • hmm interesting...

can you guys describe step by step how you start your workout? like jump in the pool, press top right and select pool swim, press again..when do you kick off the wall for the first lap? after counter starts or before? i usually start it and by second 1 i'm kicking off first lap. i tried with both countdown timer and without, same result...

  • can you guys describe step by step how you start your workout?

Usually: Jump in the pool > press start > scroll down to Pool Swim app > press start > view the screen to check pool swim app is open properly > press start again (starts activity) > kick off wall and start swimming.

Sometimes: Press start > scroll down to Pool Swim app > press start > view the screen to check pool swim app is open properly > jump in the pool > press start again (starts activity) > kick off wall and start swimming.

Either way I've never had an issue with the watch missing breaststroke for the first length.

It’s probably my style, but it almost never detects my breaststroke. Crawl, no problem.

  • i do it the same as the "usually" way described Slight smile
if i start breaststroke only the timer runs by the time i return to where i started (so 2 laps).
what do you mean check if the pool swim app opens properly? once you start it it shows options on top of the data screens, then switches to battery estimate, then back to options...etc...from there i press top right again to start and usually around 0:01 i kick off wall to start the lap.

i guess all normal in the procedure...

  • I do a lot of breaststroke and done freestyle. Never seen this behavior on my 6X sapphire. Currently running 5.72

  • what do you mean check if the pool swim app opens properly?

That’s just paranoid me double/treble checking that the options on top of data screens are there, nothing more.
