Nothing seems accurate - is it me, my watch or Garmin in general?

I've had my fēnix 6 for 10 days. I love it. I love the way it feels, looks and operates. However. Nothing that it measures seems to be accurate.

My sleep is way out. I got 10 hours the other night apparently (I haven't had 10 hours sleep since I was 8 years old!).

I train every morning doing floor climb. My iPhone gets it right to the level (I climb 100 floors with a pack on). My fenix counted 23 floors!

When I glance at the watch my heart rate sits at around 80bpm when actually its in the low 50s (strangely, when I use an app on my iPhone to measure my heart rate, the fenix suddenly becomes accurate???)

The watch itself says "Software Version 2.20 (d052960)" , but when I plug it into Garmin Express it says "Software Version: 4.30". Why would that be?

Have I bought a dud?

Any thoughts would be greatly welcome (I haven't spent hours researching solutions as I don't really have time - apologies in advance if there's something obvious I've not done)

PS. I have a good friend who works for a GPS performance and tracking software company and he says Garmin, whilst the best brand available, are known in the industry to be inaccurate.

  • But I thought George was very very happy since he found his non blue screen. LOL, these threads are hilarious.

  • Go ahead and defend the indefensible !

Across the Garmin forums are thousands  of complained about Garmin products , on those complaints surge others thousands and thousands of people complaining about accuracy and reliability of the Garmin products ! Are those people wrong ?

What "Pro " means to you ?

You direct me to Garmin Disclaims ! Are you serious? Do you think that we're at Garmin disposal to came here every day to troubleshoot problems that they have impound into ours devices ?

  • people complaining about accuracy and reliability of the Garmin products ! Are those people wrong ?

No.  I never claimed anyone of them were wrong.  In fact, I am one of those people in this thread.  So, let's summarize this thread since you either can't comprehend, or you're intentionally trying to turn things around and deflect from your comments.

    1.  Many are aware Garmin's metrics are just guidelines and may be inaccurate.  (Myself included.)

    2.  Many are finding with the newer metrics added, that they've have become even more unreliable.  (Again, my stance.)

    3.  You said Garmin has made claims that their metrics are "endorsed as professional", recommended by "professional athletes", advertise as having "accurate precision" and have "mislead people"

    4.  I provided Garmin's disclaimer that dispute your statements and asked you to reference yours.

    5.  You could not reference any of your statements and in turn got upset and asked if I worked for Garmin, was a fanboy (I'm a female by the way), and asked if your post were going to be censored.  Because you could reference your claims, you then tried to turn the tables by twisting what I actually said by asking if I were "defending the indefensible" and if I thought people who find Garmin's metrics to be inaccurate as wrong.  (Nice try, didn't work.)

Does this pretty much sum everything up?

  • Yeah sure , guidelines , some of them with 100%+ inaccurate

I'm in 108m altitude and the watch show 219-236 m during week's , but I don't care about ,I give up on the accuracy , and others thing's that I no have time to came here every day to troubleshoot problems ,

You don't answer what "Pro" means to you ! Are you a professional on something ?  Because I am , and Pro is a strong word ! When someone said that this stuff is pro , what do you deduct ? When others manufacturer use the term Pro- Professional have to back theirs claims that the product is for professional use ! Why don't Garmin have to do that ? Because of people like yo , back them blindly , doing the dirty work for them, trying to silence the critical truth about inferior products delivered !

Do you think that you mean something for them ?  They value genuine feedback , survey the forums get the info thean improve their products and services !

I mean nothing to Garmin, but it's apparent my post mean something to you.  You've made it a point to respond over and over again, but have yet to defended any of your accusations when asked to do so.  It's clear by your post and your view of Garmin that if you had even a single thread of evidence to support your statements you would have done so long ago.  You have nothing and have decided I'm the enemy for merely questioning your comments. Have a good evening 9838970.  You have nothing to provide of value to this thread and I've grown quite bored with conversing with you.

You don't answer what "Pro" means to you !

FYI, when referring to the Fenix 6 Pro, the "pro" references fully featured and doesn't mean "recommended for professional results or endorsed by professional athletes". Does this really need to be stated?  Did you think Windows 10 Pro was for professional computer users?

  • I just agree with you in everything.  Also one of the big reasons I bought this watch was due to I need the weather features.   It also has an "storm predictor" based on the pressure sensor and altitude (says the publicity and what hooked me to buy  this).  Well, my pressure sensor is just not working, it measures anything but the actual pressure. When I called Garmin support they told me that is just " a user level sensor" and is not accurate, "A user level sensor"!! in a watch this price.  Come one I know it can be wrong in some number but, the watch can not say that if I'm at 2500 mts altitude the pressure is  the same that the sea level!  (yes, I did all the needed calibrations and checks).  The Sleep track is way of, a lot,  also tells me that I slept 10 hour while the real thing  were only 4  hours.  Is a watch so expensive. Is basically an expensive gps tracker with maps and that is all. I have so many other complains but I think you got it.  If happen that I had knew all this before I just buy the e-treck or another less expensive gps with maps man.

  • Javier, are you sure that the displayed pressure is supposed to be the raw pressure measured by the watch ? I don't think so. The watch measures the pressure, then converts it to sea level pressure (as it's the most commonly used pressure). I think there are some connect IQ widgets or indicator to show the raw pressure.

I agree though, some other indicators are really poor (like sleep tracking...). The barometric sensor seems quite good though, the altitude is often very close to the real one and the elevation measured is also quite fine. So I don't think that the barometric sensor is really that bad. The first level customer support isn't always knowledgeable enough, or is given very poor answers for customers...

  • Hi RISBAC, thanks for your reply.  Just to clarify , the answers and good intentions of the people from qustomer support were super good, they were ver kind,. But they can not fix something that just doesn't work.  Maybe is only my unit but its what it is.

When you have to calibrate the barometer on your watch , the system ask you in case you want to use the current altitude first, or use  the gps data (I have tried both.  Let say the GPS gets 2300 mts (wich is close to 778 hPa approx)  then it request the sea level pressure (about 1024 hPa appprox)  ,  I understand that the system just  needs to  calculate the difference between sea level and the pressure of my current location (778 hPa), but when I finish , a mesage says "calibration finished"  then the watch shows that I'm at sea level pressure(1024 hPa) what is no correct because I'm at 2300 mts and it should be around  778 hPa.

The altitude yes, that works, the maps and GPS are really usefull but again, I could buy a much cheaper device  that do just that, I will not talk here of wich specific devices I could had bought, I don't want to sell anything.

Maybe there is something I don't understand here (probably is the reason) but what makes me really annoyed is that this watch is really expensive at least for me , but I wanted to trust in Garmin and I wanted something of good quality which I could have for a long period, but what I'm getting here is jus a device in were "some things works" and others not. In the end I'm stuck with  this watch because now I can not afford another one not sell it (no in this times)  and I just have to live with it ( or learn what is that Im not getting here).

By the way, I really hope you and your people are ok and safe during this times.  Take care and thanks again for your answer.

Hey Javier. Just for clarification, when you're at 2300m and calibrating are you inputting 778 hPa or 1024 hPa for the barometric pressure?

  • Sadly it is true. I have problems with HR and sleep tracking and mybe with floor ckimbs too… And i have thsi problems from day one purchase, so almost 7 months
