Activity missing and part of the GPS map

So I went on a run to test my new 6s pro and everything went find during the activity, but when I ended the run, the GPS picture of the map only shows like the last 1/3 of the run. The splits, HR, etc are all there from mile 0 and the first lap market is on mile 5 so I know there is data before it and the first portion is hidden or something. Anyone else have this issue?

  • Had Same problem today. Garmin Instinct

  • I'm guessing it's a corrupt timestamp or GPS stopped tracking. If you can zip and post the FIT file from the run here, we might be able to determine the root cause.

  • How do I check if my watch was being updated at this time? How to see update history of my watch?

  • Hi Seilogramp.

    Thanks for looking into this.

Please note: The file has perfect distance and time and more data for every 1km... so it is only the map data missing for around 1/2 of the trip.

It is the first 1/2 part which is missing. I did do a few "pause/resume" during my run - but I didn't stop where the GPS MAP track is starting - and the start point is also a bit off... So it seems the "track" turned on as I was on the move (random)

Maybe not relevant: (I was running with my phone in a pocket, so I am a bit curious if I can find out if the watch actually was somehow doing a software update while I was running... although I see the last update should have been released in February - so there has been plenty of time before today for the watch to make this update - so maybe there is no relation )

The watch is using the accelerometer to get the correct distance when there is no GPS data. There is no GPS data until 34 minutes and 4.76 km into the run. Nothing much can be done about this particular activity, since the file is not corrupt, just wasn't getting a GPS signal, so the data does not exist. Suggest that before starting your next run make sure you have a solid GPS lock and try doing a "GPS soak" as mentioned by  early on in this thread.

There is no evidence of this in the FIT file. Doing an update during an activity would be very unlikely and something that Garmin should have already prevented from happening.

  • Thanks. Appreciated. I will check it carefully next times and see if it ever happens again!!

  • This issue keeps happening to me. Any ideas?!

  • I'm having exactly the same problem with a new Fenix 6 - all the data is there for the whole run (distance/pace etc) so it must be connected to GPS, but the first 1/3 of the map when downloaded is missing - really frustrating as I want to convert to future Courses. Have tried resetting/updating/adding and removing the devise/GPS locked on...Help please!

  • You might be having an issue with the CPE file on the watch. This can sometimes happen if the watch hasn't locked on to GPS in awhile, causing the watch to not acquire satellites. You can try the following steps and usually it will resolve the issue.

    • Plug the watch into a computer
    • Access the device drive
      • Windows
        • Connect the Garmin device to the computer
        • Press the Windows key + E on the keyboard to open Windows Explorer/File Explorer
        • Select This PC (Windows 10 only)
        • Open the Garmin drive listed
      • Mac
        • Connect the Garmin device to the computer
        • Open Finder
        • Select Go in the menu bar at the top of the screen
        • Select Computer
    • Open the Garmin Folder
    • Right Click on the Remote SW folder and delete it
    • Sync with Garmin Express
