Pause an activity, then record a different activity, then resume the original activity?

Is there any way to pause one activity, then do a different activity, then resume the original activity?

Let's say I want to record a multi-day backpacking trip, but at some point during the trip I wanted to do a "side activity" like a quick day-hike out and back to a scenic destination near basecamp (or maybe swimming some laps in a lake, or some paddleboarding, or a climb up a nearby rockwall), and I want it to be recorded as a separate activity and not be included in the stats and GPS track for the main backpacking activity.

I have noticed that there is a "Resume Later" option when you pause an activity, but it seems like it jumps right back into that activity immediately the next time I press the triangle button, not giving me an option to do a different activity before resuming the original one.

I know I can make a "multi-sport" activity, but then I'd have to plan in advance exactly which activities I'd be doing, and it would all be compiled into one event when I'm finished, when maybe all I really want to view and share later is the track/stats from only the backpacking portion of the trip, or only the paddleboarding, or whatever.

If this isn't an option, I'd love to request it as a possible new feature in a future firmware update!

  • You can add Shortcut key to change activity. And then normally you change to gear again. This has always been the case

  • This would actually require quite a bit of work on Garmin's part, with what I suspect is very limited demand.  The testing alone would be a big deal with the combinations.

Everything seems easy until you start actually implementing it and realize all the special cases.  In software development, the last 10% of the work takes 90% of the time.

Using a utility to glue the two activities together later is likely to be your best bet.

  • This would be an amazing idea. I wish there was the capability to either have the functionality of pausing, going into another activity, then unpausing the first or saving the first activity and reopening it with an "Edit" option on the watch.

I workaround I used was the multisport option. I bike to the gym, crossfit/cardio, then bike home and set it up as " Bike > Cardio > Bike" and saved it as a favorite.

For multiple hikes it would probably have to be planned in advance and saved as separate hikes e.g., "Hike > Hike > Hike"

  • Another trick I've found is set up a hotkey for "Change Sport". It's a little-known feature that for some reason isn't even enabled by default, and not really advertised, and a lot of people don't know the watch can do it (including myself, when I posted this thread 4 years ago). The only way to access the function is by setting up a hotkey. I made my hotkey the Start button, so I long-press Start (instead of a single tap).

It works very well - you can start any single activity you want, and then if you use the "Change Sport" hotkey, it converts the activity to a multisport and lets you select the next activity from the activity list. So you don't have to know in advance what activities you might be doing!

Example: You are going for a Hike, so you start a normal Hike activity. Somewhere along the way, you might decide to go fishing, so you use your Change Sport hotkey and select Fishing. When you're done fishing, use the hotkey again and select Hike. And then you pass a frozen lake and decide to do a little ice skating, so you change sport to Ice Skating. And so on. At the end, it will save everything as one single multisport activity. And you didn't need to plan in advance what activities you would be doing, and in what order.

  • Great tip on Change Sport feature. There’s many things I don’t know how to work properly on 6X so this is a pleasant surprise to learn.

  • nice workaround !! Thank you.
Truth is, I bike to gym, then I bike to work, then I bike to trackfield, do a run workout and bike back home.
I would like the BIKE activity as ONE LONG BIKE ACTIVITY.
So I ens up carrying two watches...

  • I would like the BIKE activity as ONE LONG BIKE ACTIVITY.

You could merge them with an external tool, such as the File Combiner of the FIT File Tools

  • thank you man, quick as always!
