Pause an activity, then record a different activity, then resume the original activity?

Is there any way to pause one activity, then do a different activity, then resume the original activity?

Let's say I want to record a multi-day backpacking trip, but at some point during the trip I wanted to do a "side activity" like a quick day-hike out and back to a scenic destination near basecamp (or maybe swimming some laps in a lake, or some paddleboarding, or a climb up a nearby rockwall), and I want it to be recorded as a separate activity and not be included in the stats and GPS track for the main backpacking activity.

I have noticed that there is a "Resume Later" option when you pause an activity, but it seems like it jumps right back into that activity immediately the next time I press the triangle button, not giving me an option to do a different activity before resuming the original one.

I know I can make a "multi-sport" activity, but then I'd have to plan in advance exactly which activities I'd be doing, and it would all be compiled into one event when I'm finished, when maybe all I really want to view and share later is the track/stats from only the backpacking portion of the trip, or only the paddleboarding, or whatever.

If this isn't an option, I'd love to request it as a possible new feature in a future firmware update!

  • So does it all ready work for doing a different activities? But yes, doing a different activity of the same type could be useful too. Oh wait, you mean it doesn't even offer you to chose a different one, it just resumes the open one without showing the app menu? Yea that sounds annoying, maybe sometimes you even just want to use an app.

  • I've found this a bit odd, not the request itself but rather why it isn't possible. My knowledge about the FIT format may be limited but I really don't see why you shouldn't be able to open an existing (saved) activity, load the FIT into memory and choose to resume the activity. That would solve your request.

For a long time I didn't even know about Resume Later because my instinct would tell me to go tho my activities, open one and choose to continue.

    Best regards,
    Tobias

Correct, that seems to be the case. Granted, it mostly isn't something I would need, but occasionally it might be useful to break from an activity to use a different activity/app, and then resume the first activty afterwards.

    I would say: not possible

I suspect you're right. If that's true, I'll contact Garmin and see if they might consider adding that ability someday.

Totally agree - it's definitely possible, it's just a matter of implementation

I didn't know about it until a couple days ago either, I had a Vivoactive 3 for over a year and never used anything but the Save, Resume (now), and Discard functions on the pause screen, I only noticed the Resume Later function the other day when playing around on the new Fenix.

  • Guess I'll mail Garmin that feature request too.

  • I'd love this feature. I often go for a run and then 5k into the run will stop and do "yoga" for 20 mins. It would be great to then be able to resume my run rather than having to start another, separate run.

Just tried it and it does appear to work that way unfortunately.  Stop an activity with resume later and pressing the activity button again only goes back into that prior activity.  I didn't find any way to start a second activity without canceling the first workout.

  • Would you be able to set up a multisport activity that allows you to do that - run-yoga-run?

  • This would be such a good idea. Did anyone find a workaround?

  • You can do a multi sport activity as suggested but it basically means you end up with one activity for each segment.
