F6 Solar owners, 2 questions please...

While waiting to pick up my Solars, owners please share my 2 concerns:

- why you' ve decided to take Solar over Sapphire version?

- any scratch on your Power glass already, how sensitive is glass from your point of view?

Thank you

  • I bought the sapphire originally and found the glare to be too much.  I am loving the Solar right now.  Very little glare and this helps me immensely when I'm inside at my office.  The Solar not necessary but I like the fact that with kids sporting events I'm able to get a little extra charge from the sun while I'm watching their games.  Also, to me the Titanium weight difference is noticeable vs the Sapphire version more so that the 5X.

  • I haven't scratched it yet and I've had a few times where I was pretty sure I hit it hard enough to leave a mark. So far so good, but I am not counting on my luck to last. Battery life is excellent.

  • I don't regret getting the 6x Pro Solar! Great watch, no scratches on the glass and same here. I have hit a few times and there are no scratches on the glass. I actually used it, while riding my mountain bike the Friday it was released right through the labor day weekend. It was very dusty and the watch was very dirty and no scratches looks like brand new! Another reason I decided to go ahead get the Solar version was that I have the Samsung Frontier S3 watch and that doesn't have a sapphire glass and I have been through a lot of hits, bumps, etc... on the glass and there are no scratches. Also going Titanium, it is very light!

I also put on my Titanium DLC watch band from my Fenix 5x Plus.

  • Opposing opinion here, You asked why people chose the solar over the Sapphire, but I chose the sapphire over the solar basically because the price (for me) didn't justify the battery life gains. It's $250 more for the 6X solar vs the exact same 6X without solar, (or $150 more than the sapphire), and that was just too much money for me to justify when the potential battery life gain is only ~3 additional days on top of the 21 days you'd already get.

The difference between 1 day and 4 days would be huge, but the difference between 21 days and 24 days, not so much.

That said, if I didn't care about money then I'd pick the solar because, why not :D 14% more battery life for $250 extra dollars might be considered a bargain for many shoppers, just not this shopper

  • I was going to pick up the F6x Pro but at the time wasn't sure if that was also Titanium DLC. I had the F5x Plus that was Titanium DLC and looked like new with very minor scratches even though it through some tuff hits. Smiley So, I ended up getting the Solar version and hoping it last without any major scratches.

  • That's true,  I forgot that Titanium DLC isn't an option on the regular 6X, so that's definitely a valid reason to buy the Solar if that's the finish you desire!

Any chance you could post a pic of your 5X Titanium DLC? I'm curious how it looks after a year or two of daily wear and tear. I got the 6X Stainless Steel DLC with the hopes that it'll still look new-ish after a few years

  • The 5x titanium dlc is shown in his last photo, it's the left one with the orange marks.

  • Many thanks to all of you for valuable answers! Cannot wait to pick up mine hopefully tomorrow...

  • Maybe a bit offtopic but the only reason I would buy Solar is its ability (albeit the small one) to charge the battery between 2-3% when on full sun for cca 3 hours and watch powered down (i.e. shutdown). That would be a life saver in some real dangerous outdoors situation when watch battery is fully drained (and without external charger) and one just needs to get a GPS fix and see its position on the map display for a few minutes.

That's the only reason I would buy solar and I think it is a good one but the price of the watch and the small possibility to find myself in that dangerous situation (I don't go to any expeditions and like) would decide against it (for now).

    hi,

I have as well a 5X plus sapphire, steel.

    why I choose the Solar?

    - because of the look, the anti-reflex glass looks much better in any light conditions.

    - because of the titanium + carbon like DLC finish meaning as well -10 grams (10%)

    - because glass stays lower than the bezel - on 5X plus sapphire stays flush or higher, and therefore has a kind of protection.

    no scratches till now.

I tried some screen nano protection, it ruins the look.

I'm waiting for glass protection, we will see the result. If will ruin the anti-reflex look, I will not use it.

price - it is a high price - exactly because of this, that 5-10% difference means nothing if I get exactly what I want.

    let me share a picture:

as per the solar part, I would not minimize the benefits:

5X plus, discharge rate 5% steady, in 50min of activity almost 5% battery consumption.

6X solar, started 4% discharge rate, after reaching the sunlight lowered below 2% due to solar compensation, in the same 50min only 1.8% battery drain

to me, it is a big gain.

    just me,

    robert
