Two Sapphire Fenix 6 Pro’s, backlight / contrast issues

I bought two fenix 6’s today, both are the Carbon grey DLC coated with sapphire glass.

Have a look at these photos, my wife's is on the left hand side and mine the right. Her looks very yellow compared to mine which looks far crisper and sharper. Both have backlight set to 50%.

Any thoughts on if there’s a setting other than backlight that could cause this before I go back to the shop where I bought them?

Reporting in as promised with some mixed news.  Received 2 6X Sapphire watches.  Both DLC Black.  Pretty late in the 63407 serial numbers.

If the original watch posted (first post in thread) on the left is a 1 and the watch on the right is a 10.  Then the two watches I received are a 6 and a 7.

For what it's worth, here are my observations...

    • The blacks are much improved.  SO much better than the watch on the left.  But they are still dull.
    • The whites are still tinted blue. Not as bad as other watches ive seen out there but its still clearly blue.
    • One watch has better blacks than the other (though both are still on the duller side).  But that watch has slightly worse blue tint on the white part.  So watches will still vary and its still very much luck of the draw.
    • I'm starting to think that what I perceive as 'duller blacks' is due to clear light leaks.  Which is funny because I don't remember seeing light leaks on a launch model that looked a lot like the left watch on the original picture (first post)
    • Also I will give some credence to those that are saying that the Sapphire plays a part in the 'blue' tint of the watch.  From certain angles the 'blue tint' on the intended white parts is gone.  pure white.  but from head on it's blue.
    • Wondering if i had gone with the more popular, longer wait, Grey DLC (no add to cart button when I purchased) if I may have gotten a 63408 watch.

I'm planning on keeping one of them.  It costs $30 a pop insured to send these things back to Garmin.  I'm going to go broke chasing George's watch.

  • Sweat smile There is no perfect screen....In real life white is not pure white when backlighted in my watch too but all the colors have a good representation on screen and blacks are close to blacks. I suggest you keep the watch...My opinion is that of course

  • Just to let you know that I got my watch back and could test my theory, I placed and rotated polarizing filter over a non sapphire (so one that has a blue back light for sure).  there is a position where the screen looks as it should (black backlight).   Given that the Sapphire has polarizing property.  Unless during the watch assembly  the glass  "tuned"   for this optimal position,  you will get more or less of the original blue light.

That  explain why some watch were ok (luck of the draw), where much were not.
That explain why Garmin would not acknowledge the issue, as the watches were in spec and  by the time first level support get in touch with 2 lvl support and actual engineer  would reply something like "what are they babbling about we don't use different parts for the back light"  then again back and forth.  They would eventually  realize the issue was at the assembly line level !

May be a Garmin engineer will reads this, and  acknowledge that I figured it right ? ;D
I'm letting you know that I don't mind at all congratulations in form of a Garmin watch :D

  • Sorry but I disagree with you as the blue tint appears in all angles and only when backlight is on. Also I have seen 4 watches from the latest batches that all had good screens, all were Sapphire 6X Pro.

  • Altough I didn't mind too much with the blue tint, I'm glad that found out this thread.

I found a store with 63n07 fenix 6, bought one and it's just perfect.

  • I am happy it helped you get a watch that you love

  • 63n016 Fenix 6 Pro Sapphire are perfect too... no blue tint...
