ECG Europe status update please (cmon)

Dear Garmin, I absolutely love my Epix 2 pro so many thanks for making this possible. I do however think Garmin should give us an update about the ECG coming to Europe. With Europe many parts of the world are waiting, let us know something.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

I mentioned that Samsung for 100$ gives you a watch with HR, Blood pressure and ECG.

John answered that Garmin has it as well, so I asked in which watch. Of course this device is not a watch. So the answer was misleading. But I think it's clear for everyone now.

But returning to the point. Other companies can do it in EU. Garmin cannot. Disappointing.

    Blood pressure

Really ? He was talking about a "device". NOT a WATCH.

  • Which Garmin watch has blood pressure measure?
    None!
  • Cardiologists, individuals with genuine expertise unlike you, say something different. Countless people have been able to detect and treat undiagnosed and potentially deadly atrial fibrillation in themselves. So stop spreading such nonsense.

…“Garmin wearables are not medical devices, and the data provided by them is not intended to be utilized for medical purposes and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.“…

  • Thank you for your personal opinion, and without taking my textbooks from the shelve I will try to make you aware that atrial fibrilation is in general a harmless event. Nonetheless, the afib can be triggered by serious problems like mitral valve insufficiency, which requires professional medical treatment. Patients notice the afib, and the guidelines clearly state that in general no treatment is necessary.

From a medical device regulatory perspective, a device with decision impact can cause death or irreversible deterioration of health, is the highest risk class, requiring a huge dossier for approval.

Samsung is very aware of this and lists the following on their website: www.samsung.com/.../

    • Do not use the ECG Monitor App if you have an implanted pacemaker, implanted cardiac defibrillator, or other implanted electronic devices.
    • Do not use the ECG Monitor App if you have known arrhythmia other than Atrial Fibrillation.
    • Do not take ECG measurements during any physical activity.
    • Do not use the ECG App if you are younger than 22 years old.
    • Do not take ECG measurements during a medical procedure (for example, surgery or external defibrillation procedures).
    • Do not take ECG measurements when the Galaxy Watch is close to strong electromagnetic fields (for example, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or X-Ray equipment, electromagnetic antitheft systems, and metal detectors).
    • Make sure that the finger used to record the ECG is uncovered and free of any bruises, scars, or cuts.
    • Certain physiological conditions can prevent some people from having a strong enough signal for the ECG App to detect and analyze.

    Furthermore they mention: www.samsung.com/.../

It is important to note that while ECG measurements can be a useful tool for monitoring heart health, they should not be used as a substitute for professional medical care. If you have any concerns about your heart health, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider.

So, to summarize, Samsung aims to minimize any risks in making an incorrect diagnosis, which could result the company being liable for a potentially deadly or life threatening event.

From a product market fit perspective you can ask yourself whether the Garmin population - healthy and vital sporty people - need such a gimmick. This population is characterized by a very low incidence of cardiovascular problems. This in contrast to the Samsung coach potatoes. And hipster wannabes will choose Apple anyway.

  • Samsung has no watch that I am aware of that’s actually measuring blood pressure. The watches they have only guess it.
Buy yourself some dices, throw them and from a medical perspective, it would be similar reliable.

  • I hope nobody gets harmed by the fact that a medical layman seriously claims here that atrial fibrillation is a harmless and non-treatable event. Garmin should block such dangerous comments.

I don't know why you are writing this to me.

I never said that either. That was the statement of another user.

  • While its useful as with 24/7 monitoring for months so it can more easily catch an issue if you have one (as they can be very irregular), you need to read how they couch the "usefulness" of ECG - in that they basically use watch ecg devices as a qualifier that they should probably run a medical ecg. You have to remember that watch ECG and AFIB has severe limitations in terms of watch it can read and the data it can provide - and while it can certainly indicate the presence of certain conditions - which a Doctor would then use a medical device to analyse and treat off the base of that - They do not treat off the recordings of the watch.

Unfortunately what we will never know is how much harm watches, being incorrectly treated as medical devices, has caused - in that people have concerns - check their watch and cause the watch doesn't report anything, they reckon its all good and never contact a doctor - thus a serious case is never investigated - all cause the watch said its all good.

PS - AFIB in itself isn't as deadly as you think - and that is according to the Mayo Clinic: "Episodes of atrial fibrillation may come and go, or they may be persistent. AFib itself usually isn't life-threatening. But it's a serious medical condition that needs proper treatment to prevent stroke." The issue is that it can lead to clots, increase the risk of stroke / heart failure and other related heart conditions....and that is why there is concern and its treated.
