SAD as it is very true In My Own Opinion

Hello everyone,
First of all: I’m from Germany and originally wrote this text in German, but had it translated using AI. Also, my experience mainly relates to running, cycling, hiking, and a bit of strength training.

I was an absolute Garmin fanboy for years and invested huge amounts of money in their watches (Vivoactive 4, Venu 3, Fenix 8, FR970, Instinct Crossover AMOLED).

Over time, the following issues started to annoy me so much that I recently decided to switch to COROS:

Quality control:

My Vivoactive 4 and Venu 3 didn’t have any major issues, but after that things went downhill fast.

The Fenix 8 had a ridiculous number of software problems at launch. The watch would sometimes even crash during workouts, and there were constant bugs in the first few months. At some point, I completely lost interest in it (also because it felt too heavy for me), so I switched to the FR970. Right from the start, it had a ghost touch issue with the touchscreen, so I had to send it in. The replacement unit developed inconsistent button feedback after just a few weeks. The start button became very mushy and did not meet the quality standards you’d expect from a watch that costs as much as two Apple Watches.

Eventually, I switched to the Instinct Crossover AMOLED because I liked the hybrid concept (it’s also quite bulky, but I was willing to accept that). Unfortunately, after a short time, it also developed button issues—at that point, I completely lost my trust in Garmin.

Hardware often isn’t competitive:

A Venu 4 currently costs €400 here in Germany and still uses over 10-year-old Gorilla Glass 3 (which is absolutely unacceptable at that price point, especially considering that Amazfit offers sapphire glass on watches costing around €100). The display of the Fenix 8 was dimmer than that of a €30 Xiaomi Smart Band. The processors are quite weak, resulting in a laggy user experience. Battery life is not a valid excuse here, as Amazfit and COROS offer better battery life while still being smoother. Old heart rate sensors are reused for years, even in newer watches (including the €650 Instinct Crossover AMOLED).

Unreasonable software limitations:

It’s often completely unclear why certain models don’t receive specific software features. You’re aggressively pushed toward buying a €1000 Fenix.

Poorly optimized app:

Many people complain about the app being cluttered, which wasn’t my biggest issue. However, the performance of the smartphone app (at least on Android) was. There were constant stutters and delays.

Planned obsolescence:

In an era where Google, Samsung, and Apple provide smartphones with up to 7 years of software updates, it’s completely unacceptable that Garmin sidelines devices costing several hundred euros after just two years. Sports watches are tools first and foremost, yet Garmin treats them like short-lived tech gadgets.

Pricing:

I’ve already touched on this, but it deserves its own point. Prices have increased massively in recent years, with no sign of slowing down. Each new model is significantly more expensive than its predecessor, even though improvements are often incremental (with a proper software update, the Venu 3 would be almost indistinguishable from the Venu 4).

Sports and health metrics:

Some of them work very well, but the overall experience is cluttered. Many metrics essentially aim to tell you the same thing, making it hard to get a clear, meaningful overview at a glance.

So why did I hesitate for so long?

Garmin is incredibly omnipresent, and for a long time I assumed that other brands might look promising at first but ultimately turn out to be cheap imitations. Even though Garmin disappointed me many times, I still thought other companies might be less trustworthy. COROS is a very small company compared to Garmin, and I didn’t believe they could deliver a better experience—especially when Garmin, with a much larger budget, often fails to do so. But I was completely wrong.

My COROS Pace 4, which cost €260, has provided a better experience so far than every Garmin watch I’ve owned. Here are the things that stood out positively:

Very fair business strategy:

The entire product lineup is well thought out. There’s a good option for most use cases, and the watches mainly differ in hardware, while sharing a balanced feature set across the board.

If you want a rugged watch, you buy one with sapphire glass and titanium. If you don’t need that, a cheaper Pace 4 is enough—and you still get all features that make sense given the hardware. Older models receive long-term support, COROS offers a full two-year warranty (Garmin only one). There’s no subscription model and no shady tactics to squeeze money out of customers. This makes the company far more likable than many other tech and sports brands.

Feature set comparable to Garmin:

Almost every meaningful Garmin feature is also available on COROS. After the latest update (which also reaches many older models), including Race Pace strategy and Climb Guidance, the feature set for running feels complete.

Battery life, battery life, battery life!

It’s absolutely insane that such a lightweight watch like the Pace 4 offers this level of battery life. It lasts twice as long as similarly lightweight AMOLED watches from Garmin and even longer than a 50mm Instinct 3 AMOLED.

The app:

It’s beautifully designed, logically structured, and provides everything you need without feeling complicated. Performance on Android is vastly better than Garmin’s app.

EvoLab:

It’s incredibly well thought out—simple, yet comprehensive. Instead of multiple overlapping metrics, you get exactly what you need. The values feel very accurate and match my personal perception. Most metrics align closely with Garmin’s. However, the ones I found less accurate on Garmin are actually better on COROS.

Garmin estimated my VO2max at 55.4, while COROS gave me 55. Garmin’s lactate threshold estimation wasn’t very precise—my legs would fatigue quickly even slightly below the suggested pace or heart rate. COROS, on the other hand, feels spot-on. The values are slightly “worse,” but more realistic. Even the race predictions (5K, 10K, etc.) are very accurate.

Additional features:

The running fitness test is fantastic and a lot of fun. It was genuinely exciting to analyze the recalibrated data afterward. I also really like having incline displayed as a percentage. The crown control is intuitive and works great in most situations.

Measurement accuracy:

Opinions from professional reviewers are mixed, but on my usual running routes, GPS tracking is clearly more accurate than on my Instinct Crossover AMOLED. Garmin’s stress metrics felt meaningless, whereas the Pace 4 detects stress levels almost frighteningly accurately.

For the sake of balance, I’d like to mention some downsides—but honestly, there are hardly any for me. Maybe Garmin sometimes presents data more extensively on the watch itself, and its watches can be configured more independently from a smartphone (for example, workout data pages). Also, COROS watch faces aren’t customizable. But aside from that, I can’t think of much.

I really hope COROS sticks to its current strategy and doesn’t eventually adopt Garmin-like practices if it grows bigger. As things stand now, I can wholeheartedly recommend them.

In my circle, there are many people who are either no longer satisfied with Garmin or are still using older, more reliable models and will likely upgrade soon. I’ll definitely recommend COROS to them.

Sleep not fully recorded

I have set my sleep time from 23:30 to 8:30. Since it was my first premium Garmin watch, I wanted to evaluate whether it was worth the investment by tracking how long the battery would last compared with the advertised specifications before any natural degradation set in. I’ve been keeping a log of how many days I get on a full charge with my chosen settings.

I logged 27-30 days of battery consistently from November 2023 to April 2025.
After April 2025, I stopped tracking thinking I was good and it would last forever :-)

In October 2025 I realized that the battery life felt short and started to track again.. It was down to 12 days and in December 2025 (v23.48) down to 8 days.

I have been on the same settings since 2023. Now I'm thinking maybe some updates did reset some of my settings. In Jan 2026 I took the time to review every setting and optimize it for battery life but not loosing any data (such as loosing sleep score when using power saving mode at night).. So I disabled touch screen, limited brightness, Manual Pulse Oximeter etc..; result: 12-14d

Now.. I run 37d-40d on one charge.. without loosing any data. How ?

I basically used the Factory settings and watch face, disable notifications (having my phone bugging me was enough) but THE TRUE winner was: Turn Phone Connection OFF and only turn it ON when needed.

I setup the "Phone Connection" as a Hot Key on my Activity button (top right, long press brings the Phone Connection screen). Before bed, I make sure that I turn it off, in the morning I turn it on until the watch is synchronized then turn it off. At lunch, when I think about it or after an activity I turn it back on for the duration of the sync and then back off.. Result 37d-40d of battery life AND my phone doesn't have to be charged daily anymore either. The 37d-40d is with 4-5h of indoor activities per week (indoor bike), I will soon be able to bike outside and will start logging activities with GPS so I expect to go down.. I hope not below 27d will see.

So IMHO the real culprit might be the number of time the watch communicates with the phone over the day and for what reason.. is it weather info, GPS location?

So yes, my "fix" requires me to press a button 3-4 times a day.. but now I only charge less than 1/month which in the long run extends my watch battery life expectancy.

Now, I'm not saying Garmin shouldn't fixing anything.. I didn't have to do that for over 18 months.

Garmin-Ben : Maybe a way to fix it could be for them to introduce a new setting such as: "Phone sync schedule" where one can say:

- Do not sync at night (I'm sleeping, I don't care)

- Only every 1 hours in the day

- Immediately after an activity.

Hope this helps, for me the watch is great.. the phone connection is killing it...

Peace.

p.s. Part of me wonders if this setup would’ve reached 60 days in the early days… but that mystery stays unsolved.

Epix Pro 25.11 GCD download

Hi, I've been in the beta program, and I want to switch back to the stable version, SW 25.11. I know the smaller watch gives less battery life. I have small wrists. It was still a decent battery upgrade over my Fenix 6S (at least in the beginning).

In the past few weeks, my battery life is now horrible. I go to bed with 100% charge, wake up with less than 85% I did have Pulse Ox on at night only but I havent touched that setting since I got the watch. I was losing less than 10% during sleep previously.

I have no music on the watch, have added no new sensors. I am now losing 10%+ an hour during GPS activities.

I have done a factory reset to no avail. I am very frustrated because it hasnt even been 6 months and I now just wish I had my Fenix 6 back if i had know that this was going to be the case.

Has this been an issue with the most recent update?

I love my Epix Pro Gen 2 51mm

I just want to say that I absolutely love my Epix Pro Gen 2 51mm.

I had Fenix's for many years, from the 3 to the 3HR to the 6. The Epix Pro is a huge improvement.

I wear my Fenix pretty much around the clock. I use it mainly for hiking, skiing, backcountry skiing and mountain biking. I love how it tracks my sleep and my stress and I often refer to those reports. I use the music function quite a bit. And I rely on my Epix during the day to let me know about texts and phone calls, because I keep my phone on silent.

I have it connected to my inReach Mini as well as my Edge 840 and my Varia RTL 515.

I love the screen and I find that the legibility, especially with the 51mm size, to be a huge improvement over my old Fenix's.

I am also very happy that Garmin continues to regularly release software updates and bug fixes.

I love my Epix Pro. For me, it just works, and it works exceptionally well.

Too Many Courses on Epix

I have the Edge 1050 and the epix Pro.
Since the release of Fenix 8, the so called stable maintenance releases was a huge regression, software wise. Garmin is carrying critical bugs with each “stable” release and in my opinion the support and software reliability is at the lowest level I have ever seen in Garmin or any other tech over a long career in tech.

I am a hiker and mountaineer but I cant run due to back injuries, so I train on an indoor bike and on incline treadmill. When I get a suggested workout such as for instance Base 32:00 min, I want to be able to do that workout either on the Inddor Bike or as a walk but with the GPS turned off, so Im then using the treadmill. Seems odd that I cant be indoors to do a suggested workout, when all I want to do is train in the zone 2 region, so it shouldnt matter where I train.

Screen going blank at split points

Hi All,

Has anyone else got a bug where the screen goes blank at split points?

For example I have mine set up to record a split time every mile. The watch vibrates at this point correctly, but the screen goes blank so I can't see the split details.

After a few seconds the activity data screen comes back on, and there are no other issues with the screen, so can only assume I have a gremlin.

Will try and reset, unless someone has a good idea to try.

CONFIRMED BUG - Backlight process running 24/7 on NATIVE firmware, AOD disabled, NO third-party apps - This is destroying our battery life

I have been dealing with unexplained battery drain on my Epix Gen 2 since December 2025. Like many of you, I went from 16 days of autonomy to 8-9 days. I did two full factory resets. Nothing changed. I enrolled in the beta program hoping 26.03 then 26.04 would fix it. They did not.

So I decided to dig into the logs myself. And I found it.

--- THE BUG ---

Open your usage_hrly.log file and look at the "Time with backlight on" counter. Here is what you should NOT see:

1h00 → Time with backlight on: 01:00:28
2h00 → Time with backlight on: 02:00:28
3h00 → Time with backlight on: 03:00:28
4h00 → Time with backlight on: 04:00:28

The backlight counter is incrementing by exactly 3600 seconds every hour — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. My display setting is "screen off, wake on touch" (backlight mode 3). AOD is completely disabled. The screen is physically off. Yet the firmware counts the backlight as ON continuously.

This is not a display issue. The AMOLED screen is not literally on. But the display management PROCESS is running permanently in the background instead of going into deep sleep. This burns CPU cycles and RAM constantly — invisible to the BDM (Battery Drain Monitor) because Garmin calibrated their drain detector against an already-bugged firmware baseline. This is why the BDM does not flag it as abnormal drain: the reference baseline is itself corrupted.

This bug is confirmed present on 25.11, 26.03 (beta), and 26.04 (beta). Two factory resets did not fix it. It is a firmware-level bug.

--- THIS IS NOT THE KNOWN CIQ WATCHFACE BUG ---

I am aware of the previously reported bug where AOD updates every second with third-party CIQ watch faces. This is NOT that bug.

My setup after two full factory resets is 100% native Garmin — zero third-party apps, zero CIQ watch faces, zero external installations of any kind. AOD is disabled. I am running a native Garmin watch face. The backlight management process is still running 24/7 in the background.

This is a deeper, separate bug in the native firmware display management. It affects users with a clean, factory-reset, 100% Garmin setup. Disabling AOD does not fix it. Removing third-party apps does not fix it. Factory reset does not fix it.

--- IMPORTANT NOTE ON TIMELINE ---

I started noticing battery degradation in December 2025 — before 25.11 was released in January 2026. This strongly suggests the bug was already present in the stable firmware preceding 25.11. The January 25.11 release did not introduce the bug — it likely made it significantly worse and pushed it to a level where it became clearly noticeable. Users who think their battery drain started with 25.11 may actually have been affected earlier without realizing it.

--- WHAT I TRIED ---
- Disabled WiFi permanently
- Disabled AOD (was already off)
- Disabled pulse ox (already off)
- Reduced Bluetooth usage
- 2 x full factory reset → clean native Garmin setup, zero third-party apps
- Upgraded to beta 26.03 then 26.04

None of it fixed the backlight process bug.

--- TO ALL EPIX GEN 2 / FENIX 7 USERS ---

Please check your own usage_hrly.log file RIGHT NOW:
1. Connect your watch via USB
2. Navigate to GARMIN/LOGS/
3. Open usage_hrly.log
4. Search for "Time with backlight on"
5. Check if the counter increases by ~3600 seconds every hour

IMPORTANT: These log files are only available if you are enrolled in the Garmin beta program. If you are on stable firmware, you will not find these files on your device. However, if you are experiencing the same battery drain symptoms — autonomy dropping from 16 days to 8-9 days with no obvious cause — you are very likely affected by the same underlying bug. Consider joining the beta program to access your logs and confirm.

If you see the same backlight counter pattern, please reply to this thread and confirm your firmware version. We need to show Garmin the scale of this issue with hard log evidence from multiple users.

--- TO GARMIN ---

This is a premium device. I paid over $800 for this watch. I expect premium software quality to match. I have been patient through 25.11, through two betas, through two factory resets. I have now done your bug investigation FOR you, on my own time, and handed you the exact log evidence on a plate.

The backlight management process is not entering deep sleep mode when the screen is off. This has been broken since at least late 2025, remains completely unaddressed through 26.04, is not fixed by factory reset, and is not detected by your own BDM because your baseline is corrupted.

For a device at this price point, this is simply not acceptable.

Fix it. Please.

Device: Epix Gen 2
Firmware versions confirmed affected: 25.11, 26.03 (beta), 26.04 (beta)
Suspected affected: stable firmware prior to 25.11 (late 2025)
AOD: disabled
Display mode: screen off, wake on touch (backlight mode 3)
Native Garmin watchface: yes
Third-party CIQ apps: none (clean factory reset x2)
Factory resets performed: 2
Result: bug persists across all versions and resets
BDM detection: none (baseline corrupted)

During an easy endurance run, my heart rate behaved normally for the first ~3 km (around 130–145 bpm). Then, around 2.8–3 km, the HR suddenly jumped by about 20 bpm (from ~145 to ~160) within a very short time and stayed on a high plateau (~160–170 bpm) for the rest of the run.

This was clearly inconsistent with my physiological effort:

I was running at easy endurance pace

Complete conversational breathing

My wife was riding a bike next to me and we were talking normally

Later in the run I briefly stopped at 4.19 km. During the stop the HR dropped significantly (~140 bpm), but once I resumed running it quickly returned to the abnormal plateau.

Additional observations:

HR max recorded up to ~175 bpm, which is unrealistic for the perceived effort.

The overall average HR for the run was 158 bpm, which does not match the intensity.

Garmin VO2max dropped again after this run, which suggests the faulty HR values are affecting training metrics.

Important point:
When I restart the watch before the run and apply conductive gel on the strap electrodes, the measurements seem more normal. When I do not restart the watch, abnormal HR behavior appears again.

This suggests a possible sensor acquisition / ANT+ communication issue rather than a physiological response.

Has anyone experienced similar HR jumps followed by an unrealistic plateau with the HRM 600?

Thank you.

Why does a $1000 Pro watch have 'Gaming' but not a high-output activity like 'Dance'?"

Why is dance not included. I go to estatic dance once a week, partnered dance once a week. I also attend raves and shows on weekends. There are very high output activities.

I was thinking about getting myself something nice and getting some newer technology on my wrist. I own Fenix 6 Pro (gorilla glass, steel) since ~5-6 years and I was satisfied - good watch. I use it as a 24/7 watch for tracking activities, sleep, recovery (the most metrics I watch daily is: HRV, rest hr, stress). I do not run, I only do brisk walks daily, then I do couple of strength training per week and I do either bike riding or indoor rowing couple of days per week. For bike rides I use Garmin Edge bike computer. For rowing I use Fenix 6 - it can connect to Concept 2 rower and get some additional data like power, stroke rate. As mentioned, I do not have major concerns about the Fenix 6 Pro, I just want to have a newer one as I think it might deliver some benefits to me in form of 2 generations newer HR sensor, so maybe a more precise HR monitoring, more precise HRV monitoring, sleep stages monitoring. Plus there are those thingies like training readiness, which I do not have in my old fenix 6, which I do not know will be beneficial for me or not. And last thing - I think I would like to test the amoled display in the real life.

In the past I had rule I will only get the most recent model from Garmin to not be disappointed by not getting updates, new features, in case I will buy an older model. This has changed, as:

1. I am not willing to spend ~900+ EUR for the watch so far.
2. I do not wish or expect a new features in the watch in the future (if they would appear there in the future, then ok, it is a bonus, but I do not expect them)

And somehow I get to the point I had discovered there is Epix Pro Gen2 which would fit my needs - there is the same elevate 5 sensor as in the Fenix 8 and I do get some new functions over Fenix 6 and it has AMOLED screen so I can test it in the real life. I can buy 47mm version of Epix Pro Gen2 for ~580 EUR (Sapphire, titanium).

Can anybody with the real life experiences with the Epix Pro Gen2 help me understanding whether buying Epix Pro Gen2 as a replacement of Fenix 6 PRO now in March 2026 is worth?
I was also considering getting another brand like Amazfit T-Rex 3 PRO as it is cheap and there are quite a lot of good talks about it and it seems to be an inovative company, etc.., but I think, especially when I also have a garmin edge bike computer, I should stick with the Garmin ecosystem.

Sunset Widget Map Issue

When looking at the map view in the Sunset/Sunrise widget the map is blank. Anyone else have this issue? I have maps loaded on the device and can see them everywhere else on the watch.

Garmin Connect now shows watch battery percentage

Garmin connect now shows the watch battery percentage when you click on your watch in the top right

Epix Pro 25.11 Battery drain

I just got an Epix Pro Sapphire from Amazon as an “upgrade” from my Forerunner 265. It came with software version 18.xx and while I scrolled the menu’s and set up everything I noticed the battery was draining quite fast. Then I upgraded to the current software version 25.11 to check if that improved battery life and now the watch losses about 1% per hour, which means that in just 4 days it will be dead. I did the restart and factory resets after the software upgrade and all the settings are set so the battery is supposed to last 16 days. I’ve noticed all sort of issues with this recent firmware but barely any information on the battery drain issue. Can others share how the latest software version 25.11 is impacting their watch battery life?

Epix Pro with v. 25.11 crashes

Sooo .. yesterday I wrote, that I never had a problem with my epix pro, but today it happened:

Firmware 25.11, I was changing the apps via GC, I had done a copy from hiking and now I want to delete this and want to make a copy from walking.

After press on 'delete app from watch' my epix 'crashes' (or something like that) started up with the initial screens and the only message then was 'Loading Maps'.

After that watch face comes up and my epix was working again. Was it ra estart or only a kind of shut down???

So now I'm back on v. 23.18 and restore from backup. Now the same operation as before with deleting the app via GC and copy from walking, no problems, all went ok!

So, from now on I stay on 23.18, it was mentioned earlier as one of the last relative stable versions ...

Epix Gen 2 v25.11 GPS Time sync

Hi,

For the past 3 weeks my watch repeatedly reverts to EST (UTC -05:00). My watch is and always has been set to auto set time via GPS. I have restarted the watch and I have checked for updates using Garmin Express. Below is a photo showing a sync - it seems particularly confusing because after sync it shows EST time and then says London UTC -05:00. I am pretty certain I am in the UK, everyone I have asked agrees I am. Time sync with my phone appears to work and set the time correctly but I'd much prefer to use GPS.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on steps to try and remediate, thanks in advance.

I actually only noticed as I was using the watches music storage to listen to some tunes, and it stopped playing. Assuming my headphones had dropped connection I checked the watch and it was just starting up again. It's not happened before, and I am hoping I don't have some sort of glitch, is it common or should I just assume it was a one off which shouldn't happen regularly, which I can live with, but if it starts doing this frequently during activities its going to become a real problem.

The only thing I did differently last night is to listen to music from the watch's spotify app where I usually run that from my phone. But I've done that numerous times and never had an issue, so I am assuming its not a related cause.

only 2 leds on of 8 available

I developed an app for Spinning. It works fine since 2023 on most every wearable garmin device. Unfortunately the Epix pro gen 2 does not work. It monitors the HR but after few minutes of activity the HR stucked around 105 bpm. Fortunately one of my friend has that device and let me try some debug. I noticed that on 8 available leds only 2 are ON. In the same time i used a forerunner 965 and fenix 5x pro and all of them works fine. So i thought is not a question of coding. But if on epix pro gen2 we start one of the pre installed garmin app for biking for example i see 8 leds on and HR work fine. So now I hAve the feelings that the app need some more code to activate leds on epix. How i can debug the HR leds on epix proi gen2 ?
