VO2Max and Training status not updating despite high load and significant training improvements

Hi

I use a Garmin Epix Gen2 since Feb 15, 2022. Prior to that a Fenix 6 and before that a 945.

I use an external HR device: sometimes Polar Verity Sense (hand band), sometimes Garmin HRM Pro. I also use a Stryd Gen2 as footpod device, calibrated carefully and weekly.

I have been a runner and a triathlete for almost 7 years thus having basic knowledge on training, and on Garmin generally. My training has been quite structured with a Coach: with adequate Anaerobic + High Aerobic Sessions (overly high) + Low Aerobic Sessions also.

Problem: my VO2Max AND Training status has not been updating since July despite the massive mileage I have put in and significant threshold changes. I have gone from 50km mileage to 90km mileage; Pace threshold has gone from 4:25 to now 4:00. VO2Max has been stuck at 57 with Training status as Maintaining for the past 02 months (21/08), until now. Details,

- July 24: I had done a 10km race and identified my threshold pace as 4:25, VO2Max @ 56

- Aug 28: I had done a Half Marathon race: my threshold pace increased to 4:15. Prior to the race, on Aug 21, my VO2Max increased to 57.

- Sep 25: I had done another Half Marathon race: my threshold pace increased to 4:07

- Oct 16: in the latest Half Marathon race: my threshold pace increased to 4:00

During all of this time: my Training status is almost Constantly at “Maintaining”, only one occurrence it moved to Productive for less than 48hours after Sep 25 then moved back to “Maintaining” despite the high load, significant improvement in performance. VO2Max did not move at all, remains at 57.

On the exact same gears and setup, in May 2022, with lower load, I have my VO2Max increased to 61 with quite gentle effort. My threshold pace at May 2022 is 4:05+

We have note many of my fellow runners on Garmin devices experiencing the same thing: Garmin VO2Max not updating despite training increased, performance significantly improved. Some semi-pro athletes even got their VO2Max reduced from 74 to 64 with quite the same load and training schedule.

Is this possibly a bug/ defect on Garmin? I / we can send you more logs, the snapshots to showcase these.

Thanks.

  • fitness is increasing veeeery slowly but consistently, as are my VO2max readings and race prediction times

The same here for me. After an injury, my VO2 dropped down progressively to 51. So I was not surprised to see unproductive workouts for a while. Recently though, the downward slope faded away, and the watch is showing that VO2 has been increasing slowly from 51 to 52 on my indoor bike. Yesterday, I rode my road bike with a different power meter, and my VO2 got bumped up to 53 (the power readings are higher on that bike). So I know my fitness didn't really increased by a point in a day, but it is a good test...

    I still have a maintaining status :-)

So there might be an issue in the back end, where the status is not correctly calculated based on VO2 trends, maybe small or big.

  • Maybe not related, but the VO2 max widget trend graph has wrong scale on my watch. Where I have 51 vo2max , there are 4 lines above and below. The top and bottom are labeled 52 and 50, where the graph clearly shows the progression that would suggest the correct scale to be 53 and 49 respectively

  • et al.

I finally got a productive training status today.

My VO2 increased from 51 to 53 over the last 4 weeks, my HRV remains unbalanced by 1ms, and acute load in the green zone.

Did you see any change for you guys?

  • Sooo, did you increased load/intensity during this period? What caused such a sudden jump?

No change here. I mean I entered build phase of my program and Vo2 max increase by .2 after threshold run, but status remains as ‘maintaining’

  • I have a similar problem. My watch started with a VO2Max of 50 three weeks ago when I started to use it. But my real VO2Max is 30. So each run is unproductive and the VO2Max is decreasing a little with every run. After 5 runs it’s now at 49. So the down movement is very slow. I’m shocked how Garmins calculation could go so wrong when every other source like Runalyze or Apple Health is able to calculate it so easily.

  • Many sources say that at the beginning Garmin's calculations tent to overshoot, to settle after couple of weeks. I think this is what we are seeing in your case.

  • I believe everyone seems to have this issue. I haven;t had my VO2 max increase since way back when I had my instinct 2 now to my epix. It no longer shows during runs either. Maybe share your experiencing on my bug report with garmin, or at least "upvote" it.

    https://forums.garmin.com/beta-program/fenix-7-series/public-beta-reports/i/public-beta-v10-xx/vo2-max-not-showing-after-run

  • But I run for 3 weeks already now. How long do I have to wait? It’s a long way from 49 to 30. And it’s very frustrating when I improve a lot but my watch shows me as unproductive.

  • I upvoted yours. But in my case the VO2Max is showing up and is calculated. But the calculated value in the beginning was far to high and now it’s decreasing very slowly.

  • I am guessing the VO2Max was bumped up by a point because I started using my outdoor bike again, and the Faviero Assiomo powermeter on it reads higher than my Keiser M3i indoor bike. The artificial bump happened immediately on the first ride and was a good opportunity to see whether the training status would change.

I understand a bit more what is going on. During the first ride, I used my Edge 1030 and the Epix to record the ride, but I discarded the Edge ride. The Epix training status didn't change, but the VO2 changed, probably through Physio Trueup.

Yesterday, I used the 1030 to record. The 1030 assessed the ride as productive, showing an increase in VO2max. The watch then synchronized through Physio Trueup. So I am guessing I am just seeing the Edge training status reflected on the watch.

I think it is evidence that the Epix training status is not working right, despite recording VO2Max changes right.
