Glitchy Gesture Activation

I’m having some issues with activation of the screen in gesture mode.

Intermittently, particularly when it’s been a while since I last looked at the watch, when I turn my wrist to activate the watch, it will only activate extremely briefly- a flicker really. Even pressing buttons or tapping the screen has the same effect. It can be difficult to activate the watch when this happens- usually takes a number of attempts before the screen comes on and stays on. At other times it works as I would expect.

I’ve updated the firmware, restarted, and then reset to factory settings all to no avail. I wonder if this is a hardware fault with gesture detection.

Has anyone else had similar issues?

 Thanks.

  • I am getting the exact same issue on my three week old epix, was onto Garmin Chat support last night and the advise was to do a factory reset, even when i explained the watch is only three weeks old.. I'm on v11.28, not sure if I'll do a factory reset or hang on for the software update and see what happens, annoying to be honest as it's an expensive bit of kit ...

  • I had the same problem it doesn't respond to updates or factory resets as it is a hardware issue, I would get in touch with Garmiin and ask for a replacement. They will ask you to take pictures of your serial number, receipt and a video of the watch doing the glitch.

  • You might want to check with the retailer where you bought it. They might replace it under warranty.

That's what I did when I got the issue with mine. I went there and showed them a video of the issue and gave a referrence to this thread.

Chris also offered to replace the watch if retailer wouldn't honor the warranty...

  • Master reset and the update to 13.22 has unfortunately not helped, at least for me, rather the opposite. Unfortunately, I could observe the problem now already with 10% more battery than before.

  • I seem to have this problem on my month old Epix running 13.22. Some people have said that if they turn off the touch screen the problem goes away. Now I have noticed that I also have a sporadic problem when disabling the touch screen. Sometimes I tap on the touch icon and nothing seems to happen. The icon stays illuminated. First few times this happened I touched it two or three times with no apparent change. After I exit the Control menu the touch screen is still active for a few seconds but does eventually turn off.

Now it might be a complete coincidence but that’s about the same delay as I experience with my glitchy gesture activation. When that happens if I keep twisting my wrist the display continues to flash. However if I wait a few seconds before twisting my wrist it usually activates fine.

Does anyone else who has glitchy gesture activation also have a glitchy touch screen problem like mine? Just wondered if there might be a connection?

  • Hi Graham

Having been in the same position as you and others with both battery drain and glitchy screen, and having gone through lots of tests, restarts, upgrades and tracking, I would agree with comments of others that this is a hardware issue. I'm on my 3rd EPIX 2 - first was battery, second was screen, both replaced under warranty - and it is now fine. In fact the best watch (for my needs) since I started with running tech about 20 years ago.  Really sorry you have the problems and, of course you really shouldn't have - but I ended up happy. Hope you do too :-)

  • Thanks. I’m planning to exchange it when i can find a good window. I’m a bit nervous though. The two issues I have are irritating but only sporadic. In every other way the watch is amazing. When I read on this forum some of the issues other people are having they seem much more serious: sticky buttons, battery drain, poor visibility of screen in certain conditions etc. I don’t want to exchange it for something with worse problems! But then I suppose I can always exchange it again.

  • Dont be nervous - its an expensive watch and should work properly with all features. If you put up with glitches you may find it fails more often and people are less likely to help the later it gets. Keep sending them back until  you get one that works the way you expect. I use mine every day and I have not had a problem since I got the last one 10 months ago. Even with daily GPS tracking (all systems), heart rate broadcast and a few minutes of "torch",  i have a battery life that is somewhere between 1 and 2 weeks  - so good now I dont consciously think about it.  I have switched off the blood oxygen tracking which seemed to help and have set the "night time" feature which saves battery when I sleep. Other than that is it pretty much standard set up with gesture activated time display.  Screen should be, well, just excellent - my eyes are not what they once were and the OLED screen was the key factor for me over other watches. I use the watch in bright sunlight and at night and continue to be impressed by the screen.

  • Thanks. I'm going to start the exchange process tomorrow

  • Hi Chris, I'm going through the same issue with Garmin India. I'm on my second epix gen 2, the first one they replaced due to a crack/scratch under the screen. The second device started showing the gesture glitch within2 days of using it one and half months back. I contacted Garmin India and they've asked me for the SW version which was 13.22, video of the issue and the settings I've been using. I gave them everything and the dealer picked the device from me. They mailed me after a few days saying that there were a lot of pending software updates and that was causing the issue and the device is perfectly fine now. They sent me the details of the updates they did and to my surprise it was just some fonts and languages, that I didn't install purposely as I don't need them. The sw is still 13.22. I don't know whether they are trying to fool me or they are inherently ignorant but this is what happened. I gave them link to this forum and even sent them screenshots of this but they refuse to acknowledge it and says that the device is just fine and I need to take it back. This is my 2nd Epix gen 2 and I still have 4 months warranty left. Out of my warranty period the the device was with them or unusable for more than 2 and half months. Kindly help please as I'm at the end of my wits. It's been more than 125 emails so far...
