Glitchy Gesture Activation

I’m having some issues with activation of the screen in gesture mode.

Intermittently, particularly when it’s been a while since I last looked at the watch, when I turn my wrist to activate the watch, it will only activate extremely briefly- a flicker really. Even pressing buttons or tapping the screen has the same effect. It can be difficult to activate the watch when this happens- usually takes a number of attempts before the screen comes on and stays on. At other times it works as I would expect.

I’ve updated the firmware, restarted, and then reset to factory settings all to no avail. I wonder if this is a hardware fault with gesture detection.

Has anyone else had similar issues?

 Thanks.

  • There really is only one satisfactory way for Garmin to deal with this for those of us who are experiencing the issue:

    1) Reserve enough new stock to offer replacements.
    2) Offer an advanced replacement for those experiencing the issue (put a credit card hold on new watch until old watch is received would be fine).

Of course, this is assuming they figure out what is causing it and ensure that the newer stock doesn't also have the problem.  I still tend to think it's a hardware issue with either the touch screen, accelerometer, or mechanism that activates / deactivates the OSD, etc possibly due to static electricity or something causing it to go haywire.

Every time is happens to me, I'm at work in a dry environment with plenty of static electricity.  When I get home after my shift (or before my shift), it never does it.  So I haven't been able to record a video of it in a controlled setting at home.  But it did it throughout my work shift both yesterday and the day before constantly.

  • Even after the public update 7.35 the problem persists. Sometimes it is ok for days tham starts again casualy. I think it is not a SW problem but a hardware...

We continue to look into the cause of the issue. For anyone that would like to be added to the tracking case, please highlight my name and send me a Private Message. Thank you!

As soon as we have confirmed the cause, I will update this thread and our team will email everyone on the tracking case.

  • My watch just started doing the same thing that the video clip shows

  • Hi,

I have noticed that this glitch only appears for my watch when the battery drops below a certain level. I haven’t identified what percentage exactly but after a full charge it operates as expected until there is roughly 3 or so days left of battery remaining, at which point the glitch presents itself until the next charge.

  • That’s exactly the same on my watch so I did some “research “ on battery level vs screen flickering

I hope that they fix the problem for all of you who experience it, and replace your devices if it turns out to be a hardware problem.

For what it's worth I've used Gesture Activation during general use since start and have been below 30% several times and below 10% a few and never had any problems.

  • Good to hear that. I am no engineer but that sounds more of a hardware than software problem.

  • Interesting... I will have to pay attention to see what the battery level is at when it happens on my watch again. Somewhat strange that it would start doing it at roughly 50-66% charge.  It would make more sense if it did it when the battery is very low or in a low power state, but roughly half charge makes no sense, lol.  But I will certainly report back with my experience!  I do know that when it has happened on my watch, it sometimes lasts for just a few minutes, and sometimes for hours at a time.  But it does stop doing it, it isn't when I have charged the watch, so the battery % would either be the same or lower than when it started glitching.

  • From my experience the issue becomes really worse below 60% battery charge which made the device more or less useless as the issue occurred nearly continuously.
