Glitchy Gesture Activation

I’m having some issues with activation of the screen in gesture mode.

Intermittently, particularly when it’s been a while since I last looked at the watch, when I turn my wrist to activate the watch, it will only activate extremely briefly- a flicker really. Even pressing buttons or tapping the screen has the same effect. It can be difficult to activate the watch when this happens- usually takes a number of attempts before the screen comes on and stays on. At other times it works as I would expect.

I’ve updated the firmware, restarted, and then reset to factory settings all to no avail. I wonder if this is a hardware fault with gesture detection.

Has anyone else had similar issues?

 Thanks.

  • I restored the factory defaults (again) yesterday, and that did seem to allow me to go about 24hrs without the gesture flickering/glitch (previously wouldn't go much longer than an hour).  Unfortunately, the flickering has returned this afternoon.  I literally haven't used the watch for anything today other than occasionally glancing at it, so no idea what causes the flickering to suddenly kick-in.  Also -- maybe a bizarre thing -- when I restored factory defaults, I got standard watch faces that I am 100% certain were not there before even though I was previously running 7.24 (and I powered on/off the watch many times).  It made me wonder if part of the issue is that the watch is not fully/appropriately installing all the elements of 7.24.

And lastly -- in the past, I would do a full restart as the watch would usually become unresponsive when it is happening.  However, per a post from someone above, I have noticed that tapping the back button several times seems to restore normal function.  Still sucks (hopefully Garmin finds a fix), but better than a full reboot of the watch.

  • UPDATE:  After going several days without the issue reappearing (after I upgraded to 7.24), the issue reappeared today for about 10-15 minutes.  I was not even interacting with the watch, but just raising my wrist to view the time and notifications.  It just started doing it without any prompting from me or button presses.  The touch screen becomes unresponsive when it happens, but yes a few buttons presses and it disappeared again.  This did not work last time though... I wasn't able to get it to stop with any button presses last time.

With all this in mind, a few things are clear:

    1) Firmware version isn't a factor, though updating the firmware may get it to go away temporarily

    2) No series of button presses or touches is required to get it to happen... it can just start happening by raising the wrist

    3) When it happens, sometimes it will go away by holding down a button or restarting the watch, but it eventually reappears

    4) I'm speculating that it may be a hardware issue, perhaps static electricity or another external factor?  If it were a software issue, one would think that there would be a repeatable series of events that causes it to happen (certain button combinations, screen touches, etc).

    5) Unless perhaps it is notifications that is causing it?  Has anyone noticed that they've gotten a notification before or right when the issue happens?  I don't remember if I did or not, but I will be paying attention for next time.

  • Regarding #5 above, I’ve had notifications turned off, but still have the problem.  So, at least for me, notifications doesn’t play a role.  I agree that I think it’s hardware.  Specifically, something related to the touch sensor(s) since disabling touch makes the problem go away completely.  I just think a lot more people would be having the issue if it were software.  Garmin should be offering to replace our watches. it’s not acceptable that a $900-1,000 watch doesn’t work in the primary mode that it was designed to be in (AOD/gesture/touch).  It’s been over 3 weeks and still no answer.  Regretting the purchase.

  • Before upgrading to 7.24, the problem went away for me after getting a notification on the screen (also turning off/on always on display option worked as well)

Since upgrading to 7.24, this issue occured only once after the upgrade and has been fine since.

  • same issue for me too. reboot is all that fixes it.

  • Thanks for your input about the notifications... we can rule that out too then.  According to Chris, they won't have stock until mid-March, but they should be holding a percentage of units for replacements like most companies do.  I'm hoping it's not something that will eventually be affecting all units.

  • We will see wether they have replacement units in stock. I had to send my Epix 2 to the Garmin Service Department and waiting for exchange.

Hopefully I will receive my device within the next days. I am not willing to wait until Mid March. Should this be the case I am resigning from my order.

  • I am sorry you are having an issue. Please note, we continue to look into the cause of the issue and work on resolving it.

  • After 3 weeks with the new firmware and everything working properly the issue returned yesterday out of nothing. Without gesture the watch first showed the menu and then started the on-off-issue again.

    So it is still there.

I really hope that it is a software bug that can be solved via an update!!!

  • It is a strange issue, with no apparent trigger that is repeatable or understandable.  Mine hasn't done it at all for the last few days, nor have I done anything different with the watch.  Now I know it will reappear out of nowhere at some point again, and that causes me to do some double-takes when I raise my wrist, just hoping it doesn't happen again.  But when it starts happening, it is always just a raise of the wrist and nothing else that I have done when it starts.
