Do we get the new SW updates from 945?

Can someone from Garmin elaborate on this? I really want the new training load feature.

Look it's one thing to *** about something that's obviously not possible

Just because something is possible or impossible in no way changes the definition of the word "entitlement".

I would gladly pay small fee to get the feature

Now this sounds completely reasonable to me.  Someone suggested putting the updated features on the IQ Store and people can make a one time purchase to get them like some of the apps available.  Best idea I've heard yet.

Buying a top of the line product comes with the expectation that it will be supported and updated through it's lifetime or at least couple of years, just look at your phone

A lot a people keep using their smartphone update as the deciding factor on why the should get the updates.  This is just one example that they use in their favor, but this isn't the case with all "top of the line products".  Let me give you an example.  I bought a 2017 Dodge Ram and my wife bought a 2018 Jeep Cherokee.  Both made by Chrysler and purchased from the same dealer.  They both came with the identical 8.1 HD touch screen radio system.  The only difference is the 2018's come with Navigation standard and if I want it I have to pay $700 to add the feature.  Wait a minute!  I paid much more than she did, it's nothing more than a software update because my radio already supports it.  Would I like a free update?  Of course.  Should it be given to me, or do I expect it?  Absolutely not!  Is Chrysler cheating, fooling, or taking advantage of me?  C'mon!

  • You should stop buying Jeep - sounds like they are stiffing you!

I bought a Ducati motorcycle and they added features via a firmware update to improve the gas mileage and the power curve 9 months into a model cycle. They gave existing owners the option (for free) of taking the update. Some people opted into it, some didn't.

I've bought a number of Ducatis since. But I would steer clear of Jeeps!

From Garmin website: "Garmin releases system software updates periodically. It is recommended to check for updates every 3-4 months to ensure the device has the latest system software."

You're right they don't state how long the product support will last through the years, however they do state that it will be updated every few months.

Regardless of this I still believe that basic stuff like vo2 max should be ported to all watches capable of it not just f5+, it's a basic feature of every Garmin watch, and all that's had been done with is that it now incorporates heat and altitude in the calc.

Next time buy a car that does in fact guarantee software updates if that's what is important to you. These watches are heavily depended on software and therefore some simple feature updates should be expected to keep it relevant.

I think you misread my post.  It was my wife's Jeep that got the Navigation feature added.  Anyway, my point is not every purchase gets addition features added through software updates just because it's possible, nor does everyone expect it.

Just because you feel VO2 Max is "basic", doesn't mean everyone else; most importantly Garmin, feels the same way.  A lot of people feel the VA3 should have open water swimming and the ability to record HR during swims.  This is something "basic" to them.  Wouldn't this contradict what so many on this thread are saying?  Their "flagship 5+" is no longer so because cheaper watches have features theirs doesn't.  Now Garmin is suppose to give every watch in their line-up every feature available if the software supports it because someone feels it's "basic"?

No, because someone feels it's a flagship...

We can now discount every reason you gave in this thread for why you should get the new features on your 5+.  As you stated, Garmin shouldn't add the features to other watches just because it's capable and someone feels the features are basic because doing so will put them on par with their new "flagship" MARQ Series.

Vo2 in it self isn't basic, but to implement new calc should be and it's already supposed by first beat. It's hardly the same as va3 which doesn't have open water swimming at all, vo2 is already a feature of the watch.

It's exactly the same.  You would need a software update to implement the new Firstbeat features.  The VA3 would need a software update to have open water swimming.  Your whole argument is your watch is capable of the new features with a software update, so you should get it.  So is the VA3.  The 645 doesn't support swimming HR with the HRM-Tri or Swim.  A simple software update would change this "basic" feature since there's an existing swim app.  You still haven't answered my question, should Garmin add features to their entire line of products just because the device can support it through a software update?  Shouldn't every owner of a Vivo, Forerunner, Fenix and MARQ Series watch expect added features with future updates.
