In activity page on Connect website, CIQ data field name and image are followed by developer UUID which looks strange and means nothing to end users (perhaps this was meant to be dev name / link to dev page in store?)

inb4 this isn't the correct forum (sorry but I don't think regular Garmin support would know or care about this kind of thing)

Recreation procedure:

- in activity, add CIQ data field which records developer FIT fields (such as stryd zones)

- record activity

- view activity in Connect website

See comment below for screenshots: https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/i/bug-reports/on-connect-website-public-dev-id-is-displayed-in-plain-text-underneath-ciq-data-field-details?CommentId=9bbc86f8-bb13-4ab7-9c45-8411f7f5d47a

(btw the above url was not automatically linkified by the forum, I had to manually linkify it using ctrl-k)

Observed behaviour:

The public dev uuid will be displayed underneath the CIQ data field details (the app name and listing image, which comprise a link to the app in the store). This is not a big deal as the dev uuid is also part of the dev page [*] url in the store (meaning the dev uuid is not secret), but it looks bad.

(* Anyone can access the dev page in the store by clicking on the dev name that's displayed in the app details).

Expected behaviour:

Either:

- the dev UUID is not displayed at all

or

- instead of the dev UUID, the dev name is displayed (and perhaps it is a link to the dev page in the store). Another user has mentioned that they remember the dev name appearing under the data field details in Connect

  • e.g. Consider this screenshot from an activity in the Connect website:

To be clear as an end user or dev, if I see something like that in the activity details, it's clearly a bug regardless of:

    - whether I know that "b7fc9884-0f3e-4d29-ba67-401546c01dd8" is a developer UUID or whether I know what a UUID is in the first place

    - whether I know that the developer UUID is public or not

    - whether I remember, think, guess or know that the developer name should be displayed here

    It just looks wrong.

A normal end user would've just reported something like "weird string of letters and numbers appears under CIQ data field in Connect" or maybe "random letters and numbers in activity!!!".

  • > Do I understand correctly that the bug is not that the uuid (which is public anyway) is to be found somewhere, but that the link's text is the uuid instead of the developer's name?

Well, both of those things can be true.

    - as an end user I don't want to see some weird uuid in Connect that doesn't mean anything to me.

    - yes, one might remember (or reasonably guess) that instead of the dev uuid, the dev name is supposed to be displayed underneath the app name and listing image

It depends on whether this bug report is about:

    - simply pointing out something wrong (observed behaviour)

    or if it's also about:

    - trying to figure out what the correct behaviour is. In most cases the bug reporter does have some correct behaviour in mind, but in this case it's not necessarily for me to say. For example, the app version is in the markup, but it's commented out. Should I also report that maybe the app version should be displayed to end user? (Yes, I'm going to extremes here a bit, but maybe you see my point: I don't really know what Garmin's intentions are here: maybe they intended *not* to show the dev name at all)

    > link's text

Except I never said it was a link, I specifically said it was plain text that appears underneath a link (which is made up of the app name and listing image). It's right in the original title:

"On Connect website, (public) dev uuid is displayed in plain text underneath CIQ data field details"

But, yes, it's likely that it's supposed to be a link to the dev page in the store (the one which shows all the apps from that dev).

I'll edit the title to make it clearer. (Lucky nobody voted on this bug report yet!)

  • 1. I also noticed this strange UUID in the past days (I wasn't sure if it's something new or something I haven't noticed before)

    2. Do I understand correctly that the bug is not that the uuid (which is public anyway) is to be found somewhere, but that the link's text is the uuid instead of the developer's name? If yes, then try to edit the title, description to make this clearer. If not... well then even more so :)

  • To avoid flooding this comment section with unnecessary comments, I'll just say that I had to try 6 times to post both links below, because:

    - originally the forum abbreviated the urls while changing them to links, but then changed them back to plain text

    - then I posted both links using the "square bracket workaround", but that only caused one link to be thrown away and the other link target to be corrupted:

    - then I was finally able to post them individually

If inserting a code block doesn't work then I won't bother:
