WatchApp: Activity Recorder

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/be468042-047e-4181-ae6f-e82a3f50b04e

A simple application that allows users to record activities like the built-in apps, but with more choices of activity type and sub-type. Activities that are uploaded to Garmin Connect have the specified activity type, so you don't have to go back and edit them after the fact. Supports three user-selectable data fields on a single page; Timer, Lap Time, Heart Rate, Average Heart Rate, Calories, Time of Day, Distance, Pace, Avg, Pace, Speed, Avg, Speed, Cadence, Avg. Cadence, Elevation, Ascent, Descent, Laps, Temperature fields are available. Allows users to enable/disable sensors and GPS for each activity type/sub-type.

*Note*: You have to enable sensors and GPS in the app if you want to record the data that they provide. i.e., if you want to go on a trail run and record your track, you have to select the activity type Run/Trail Running, and then enable GPS on the options page. All sensors default to off for all activity types. You must enable them explicitly.

*Note*: The list of activity sub-types is limited due to a ConnectIQ bug that affects most devices. The most requested activity sub-type is Strength Training, and unfortunately that one is affected by this bug. I will update the app as fixes are deployed with device firmware updates.

If you have a problem or question, post it in the forums thread (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?239790) so I can respond.

Revision History:

0.9.6
* Added auto-save prompt 3 seconds after recording is stopped, much like you'd experience with the built-in activity applications.
* Added support for additional data fields, reorganized the data field selection to match up with the 920xt apps.

0.9.5
* Initial Revision
* Supports 920XT w/ 3.20 firmware and VivoActive w/ 2.70 firmware. Please post if you have success with earlier firmware versions.
  • I don't know if it has been rolled out to all other devices, but it has worked on the fr920xt for a few versions. I believe it was fixed in ConnectIQ 1.1.0, but I can't find the post about it right now.

Unfortunately, without some way to identify the supported ConnectIQ version, there is nothing I can do to protect users with old firmware and still offer the feature. The only thing I can do is to never publish an app until I can be sure that everyone is on firmware that supports the feature. So I figured it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

I added a note to the app description that says...

If you experience crashes after selecting an activity sub-type of Indoor Skiing, Strength Training, Cardio Training, Match, Exercise, Challenge, or Warm Up, you need to update your device firmware. This is caused by a ConnectIQ bug that I cannot work around.

i saw your note on the page when I searched (and found out u added support for F3)
May i ask exactly what / how is the "crash" or whatever that happens after the offending activity profile is selected?

As u may know, my GymTimer app that I've been testing for few weeks now seems to be behaving fine. (The only exception is the session saving bug which per Brian affects all apps that uses the ActivityRecording on the F3)

So... I'm also on the fence as to publish or not publish. Like ur case and your statement. :-)
  • The app would crash because of an exception. Since exception handling was broken with older versions of the SDK, I don't believe you could work around it.
  • Tempe sensor support in 920XT

Does this application support the tempe sensor on a 920XT? I can't figure out how to pair it, since it is not supported as a built in sensor.
  • No. The temperature will only be reported for sensors that the system can detect.
  • GPS not working after vivoactive 3.0 upgrade

Hi Does anyone else has this issue?

After the vivoactive 3.0 firmware, when I open the recorder app, the GPS doesn't come on anymore. I used the stock walking/running app and GPS works fine, and I checked the option within the recorder app and confirm GPS is enabled also.

    Kindly check

    thanks

  • I just updated the firmware on my wife's vivoactive last night. I'll test the app on it when I get home.

I really would like to use this for my gym strength training activity. Is there any how to or instructions on this app? When I go to settings within recorder it doesn't acknowledge my button presses. For instance - settings (long press) activity type- training- strength training. When I select that it just goes back to training and it never 'selects' same for my data fields.

    I'm using a F3 with 3.6.

    Thanks

i can't say I have your prob. Cos it works for me per what you wrote. I also manage to change my data fields per the app. It's the same as navigating garmin native app.

    I'm also on an F3 and 3.6
U said when j select it, it goes back to training - well, that's what happens. U made ur choice, it goes back to prev menu then u esc esc esc till u get to the app interface.

    Can I buy a clue ?

    not working with 3.0

Upgraded to version 3.0 on vivoactive. Recorder no longer remembers activity settings.
