I wanted a quick way to check my heart rate without starting an activity, so here it is. I also wanted to see how close I could get it to having it look "native" (at least on the fenix 3, I don't think the other watches have chart widgets like this natively).

Changelog:

1.3.2 - Fix stupid bug in range display
1.3.1 - Longer periods, notify on HRM connect
1.3 - Configurable period and colour, autoscale y axis, port to app
1.2 - Persist data across sessions, compatibility with square watches, visual tweaks
1.1 - Chart that looks like Garmin's
1.0 - Initial version, just numbers, never released
  • THANK YOU for answering request of turning the widget in to an app for vivoactive. Now it can indeed be used and it is BRILLIANT.
    Two requests/suggestions if i may:
1-Is there a way you can extend the monitoring period beyond 60minutes (ie for overnight monitoring). I know it would be hard for the battery but could be v useful for people with heart conditions.
2- i would find useful if when i start the monitoring, a counter could show the elapsed time.
This is particularly useful for the long monitoring times so that you can immediately know for how long you have been monitored.

    THANK YOU

Just my thot, I'm using an iphone app to track that overnight. gives you the graph and all that.

I'm not sureon a Vivoactive a chart could be visible in a small data field area. I find already hard to read those data fields that are multi value (ie those that display speed, average speed and max speed, a chart would look like a dark tetris blob.
    Good idea anyway.

They don't have charts on them, clearly a defect :-)

Please consider adding resting bpm calculation, the same way the fitbit charge HR shows after an ivernight monitoring.
    Thank you!

    Bug report
Heart Rate Chart (app) 1.3.2 on Vivoactive 2.70 gives an error. After starting the app after ~3 seconds an IQ icon with a "!" appears. App will not run; I can only back out.

    - Before this update the app worked as expected
    - I tried restarting the Vivoactive, no difference
    - I tried uninstalling and re-installing the app, no difference

I'll patiently wait for dev SimonMacMullen to look into this.

    Misc
I'd love to use the long-period HR monitoring during sleep. Maybe for my purpose a dedicated sleep app with movement and hear rate monitoring would be better suited. I'd like to be able save a sleep report to Garmin Connect and see the development of sleep statistics over time. So in essence an upgraded version of Garmin's sleep monitoring functionality I guess.

I'm curious to learn for what purpose everyone uses this app?

    Mine bugged too
I could not try the overnight monitoring as it didn't launch.

I am wondering if you have coMpared the battery consumption of this app, against to launching an indoor activity such as indoor bike (no gps) and use it just for heart rate monitoring.
My feeling is that this third party app uses more battery, but i might be wrong as i have not compared the two starting from the same battery percentage (i simply noted the battery discharge percentage on two dofferent sessions).
    Now a few thoughts:
To be useful this app needs to do what the built in monitoring doesn't do.
Pros of native hr monitoring built in with activities:
    - it saves a chart that can be stored and reviewed
    - it displays up to (?) 9 heart related data fields (obviously this is not helpful for overnight monitoring, as you won't be looking at the watch)
    Cons of native hr monitoring:
Doesn't display a chart when in use
Doesn't store "min HR" (it just saves max and average hr). Min hr is useful to see how slow your heart beats when you are fast asleep- with my fitbit i see sometimes i reach as slow as 45bpm in my sleep.
    Pros of Babysimon's HR app:
    - it displays a chart
    - it records min bpm reached during monitoring
    Cons of Babysimon's HR app:
    - it doesn't record/store/shows average bpm during session (ie you cannot tell what is your resting bpm)
-can't be stored on IQ connect (i think third party apps cannot log on iq connect anyway)
-you cannot select which heart related datafields you can display when using the app,as the displayed values are preset (min, max and current hr).
Cons of both the native app and babysimon's:
Neither calculate HRV (heart rate variation) and unfortunately the only HRV app available on IQ store doesn't work on the vivoactive.
Bottom line, thanks to Babysimon to put time and effort in to this app that regard as the best currently available as a third party app for the VA.

Hmm. Of course, it works for me, in the simulator at least.

Two possibilities spring to mind: (1) the saved properties file is corrupt or somehow incompatible between versions (although it really shouldn't be) or (2) the tone / vibration when connecting to the HRM (added in 1.3.1) is crashing the vivoactive.

So can you help me investigate?

For (1), please connect your watch via USB, then move the file GARMIN/APPS/DATA/EA97FDFA.STR (for the widget) or GARMIN/APPS/DATA/6761E7B5.STR (for the app) off the device, then see if that fixes the problem. If it *does*, please send the file to me.

For (2), does it only crash when the HRM is detected? If you start the app/widget with no HRM, does it not crash?

    Thanks!
