App: START TO RUN

The schedule is a 10 week run/walk schedule with 3 lessons per week.

Advice:
  • Try to run in an even pace (run slow enough so you can keep up this pace!)
  • Walk in a way that you are active but also recuperate enough to handle the next running block
  • Take (at least) one day of rest after each lesson!
  • Treat the schedule as a guideline (take extra rest when you feel too tired!)
  • Consult a doctor to take a cardiogram is a wise thing to do
Trivia:
  • This is the schedule that taught me how to run. Back in the day I couldn't run 500 meters, now I'm running ultramarathons... so this schedule worked wonders for me... I'm pretty sure it will also enable you to take up running, which is the reason I wrote this app for the Garmin Connect IQ platform.

The apps are free to use indefinitely but donations are encouraged from within the apps with a small encouragement text.
  • hi Wayne,

    The 5k scheme has indeed walking breaks and ever increasing run minutes until you can run 5k.
    The 10k scheme does not have walking breaks, but assumes you're already able to run 30 minutes in a go and builds up your condition with endurance runs and interval sessions.

    For example this is the schedule of the first day of week 1 for the 5k app:
    run 1'
    walk 1'
    run 1'
    walk 1'
    run 2'
    walk 2'
    run 2'
    walk 2'
    run 3'
    walk 3'

    this is the schedule of week 1 of the 10k app:
    * lesson 1: run 30 minutes
    * lesson 2: run 35 minutes
    * lesson 3: interval session:
    10 minutes warm up
    4 blocks of 100 meter fast running and 900 meter recovery
    10 minutes cool down

    (Before you start the lesson you're always presented with a detail screen of what the lesson will contain.)
  • Any chance of an update to allow using indoors? Maybe in the settings part of the phone app? The weather here isn't really good for running outside during winter. Tried the first day on my F3HR, and it only logged 0.2 miles since the GPS was overriding the foot pod I use for treadmill.

    Also, on F3HR, after choosing the activity it shows the summary, but we have no way to see what's on the details page. community.garmin.com/.../1301238.jpg
  • The screen in your screenshot is actually the details screen, there's no screen that has more details.
    I'll change the description at the bottom to summary to make it less confusing.

    I'll have a look at an option to disable the gps (I already found my footpod, still to find a CR2032 battery :) )
  • It was relatively straightforward to implement (finding a cr2032 battery for my footpod was the hard part :))

    I've released a new version where you can disable gps (if the gps is disabled the footpod distance will be used as source)
  • I tried it this morning, after disabling the gps on the phone app. It worked fine for the first 5 minutes, but then the watch beeped gps found, and the rest of the data was all off. I saw the app showed v 1.9 on the phone, but not sure how to view the version of the app on the watch. I'll delete, and reinstall the app using my computer, and let you know if my watch was just using the old version, or if there is something else going on.

    edit: After viewing the app on the watch in Garmin Express, it didn't have the "use gps" box available, so it may have just not been updating like the other apps were. More to follow.
  • The "use gps" is indeed a new option, it should be disabled if you want the footpod pace to prevail. (and you should of course also have connected your footpod in your sensors menu on the watch).
    I usually remove and install the app, that way you're sure you have the latest version.
  • First time it didn't save the gps off after downloading the new version to the watch. I stopped the activity, and it works fine after selecting it again. Thanks for the update.

    Hi and thanks for the nice application. I'm new to Garmin and have a 5x. Would it be possible to use the app with hr and spped alarms. Can I uae the round trip navigation in paralell?
  • The start to run app has been implemented as a stand-alone application.

    This means that you can't combine it with any functionality that's not implemented in the app itself (so you can't use the native hr/speed alarm, but I would need to reimplement it), same goes for the round trip navigation...
  • Hi,

    My wife and I are both using this app. I have a 'Vivoactive', my wife has a 'Vivoactive 3'
    The app works great on my watch, however, when my wife uses the app, she doesn't get the vibration feedback when counting down to the next stage ( run / walk)

    She does get vibration on default notifications etc... any ideas on how to enable the vibration for this app?
